The Gainesville Army National Guard has been providing service to the community since 1903. As part of the Florida National Guard, the unit is responsible for protecting our citizens and property in areas such as north central Florida, east central Florida, and south eastern Georgia. The unit also provides support to local law enforcement agencies. The Gainesville Army National Guard was activated on November 1, 1903 as Battery A of Company G of the 63rd Infantry Regiment at Jacksonville. On October 15th 1907, Battery A was redesignated Battery H of Company G at Jacksonville and was again activated on November 1st 1909 at Fort Meade, Maryland as part of World War I reactivation program. In 1917-1918 batteries were re-designated battery companies with numbers beginning with H1 through H5 at Jacksonville then Ft Myers (Fla.) until all batteries became brigades in 1919 when regiment was redesignated brigade level. From 1921-1927 batteries were redesignated brigade groups with numbers beginning with F1 through F5 before becoming battalion groups in 1928 when regiment was redesignated battalion level again. The organization and equipment used by the Gainesville Army National Guard have changed few times throughout its history; however there are a few notable items that continue to be collected by members of the military community including relic firearms from World War II, mounted cannons from various wars including Civil War and Revolutionary Warperiods as well as an American flag that flew over Fort Meade during World War II while it was under construction.

Gainesville, Florida was founded by the Spanish in 1565 as a small village on the Gainesville River. In 1836, it became part of Jacksonville,Florida and then Miami-Dade County. On November 15, 1907, Gainesville was incorporated as a city. The population of Gainesville reached over 20,000 by 1914. The first major development in Gainesville came with the opening of Gator Bowl in 1941. The bowl game helped to spur a drive for economic development that led to the construction of many high-rise buildings and businesses along State Road 97A – now known as University Avenue – between 1941 and 1945. This era is also remembered for the prominent role played by baseball players Jackie Robinson and Hank Aaron in making Gainesville an international center for baseball culture. During World War II, Gainesville saw its biggest growth due to the military mobilization that took place during the war. Many companies moved their headquarters from New York City or other large cities to Florida during wartime because of available land and cheap labor costs. At one point there were more than 100 businesses located in downtown Gainesville alone! The postwar years were tough for many small towns throughout America as they struggled against aggressive competition from larger cities such as New York City and Chicago. However, Gainesville bucked this trend and continued to grow rapidly while maintaining its independent spirit - something that has made it an important community today both nationallyand internationally
