The Coast Guard Auxiliary in Gainesville, Florida was founded on December 6, 1921. The Auxiliary is a volunteer organization that helps keep our community safe by providing law enforcement and security services. The Auxiliary has been able to provide these services for over ninety years! The Coast Guard Auxiliary in Gainesville was started as a result of the merging of two separate organizations: the Volunteer Fire Department and the Municipal Police Department. At its inception, the Auxiliary consisted of only men! In 1937, women were added to the Auxiliary and it continued to grow until 1966 when Women’s auxiliary membership reached 2,000 individuals! The current growth in Coast Guard Auxiliary membership can be traced back to 1978 when “Operation Homecoming” was created which helped commemorate the centennial of America’s entry into World War I. This event provided an opportunity for members of both genders to come together and share memories and experiences related to service during this historic time period. Many local businesses donated items such as uniforms, buttons, cups or medals with their names engraved on them. Overall, Operation Homecoming resulted in over $5,000 being collected which went towards new equipment for the Coastal Sheriff’s Office as well as donations to other agencies across Southeast Florida! In 1984, Hurricane Andrew destroyed many homes along the Gulf coast causing damage totaling $2 million dollars! As a result of this tragedy, donation drives were initiated by both the Coast Guard Auxiliary and local businesses in order to help cover some of those costs. These donations ranged from money raised from sales at retail stores through drive-thrus across town all the way up to contributions made online! Additionally, contributions were also made from individual donors through check-out at local grocery stores! Throughout these years there have been numerous fundraisers hosted throughout Gainesville including golf tournaments benefiting hurricane relief funds as well as car wash days benefiting Habitat For Humanity! Each event provides an opportunity for locals and visitors alike to donate their time and money without having any negative consequences. It is very important that we continue this tradition because it allows us not justto support our community but also connect with people who are similar working within it every day - making sure that everyone feels safe while living here!.

The first permanent English settlers arrived in this region were two families who came from Englewood Cloakshire England in 1835: The Lincolns and The Hardings. They named their land “Gainesville” after Sir George Prendergast who had purchased 5 miles (8 km) of Creek Indian land east of Tallahassee from Chief Osceola about 1820-21 as part of a peace treaty between Seminole Indian Tribe leader Manuel de Mariana and United States Army Major Robert Eustis during the War for Independence that began August 26th 1783 near Pensacola Beach Florida Territory line under command of Major Don Carlos Menendez Marquette . 2nd Lieutenant Nathaniel Bedford Wyeth led a group including Drury brothers John Henniker (Drury’s Store) & Ebenezer Ebenezer Morse up Pensacola beach late spring 1784 looking for an inland site to plant sugar cane plantations but found none so they returned home early summer bringing back with them 2 hogs weighing 10 pounds each worth about $4 each
