Gainesville is a city in Volusia County, Florida, United States. The population was 66,651 at the 2010 census. Gainesville is the largest city in Volusia County and one of its most populous cities. It was founded by an American family who named their land "Gainesville." The Gainesville Rifle and Pistol Club (GRPC) was founded in 1903. The club has been a member of the NRA since 1934. The first rifle to be imported into the United States from Canada was purchased by GRPC on December 5, 1903. The original rifle that GRPC acquired were two rifles: a Model 1892 Winchester rifle and a Model 1895 Canadian Rifle. These rifles were not chambered for any shotshells but instead were fitted with special barrels which allowed them to fire shot shells (shell pistols). This made them very different from any other firearms that had come before them as they could be used offensively or defensively depending on how they were used. GRPC also enjoyed playing handball, basketball and football during prohibition days which helped contribute to their popularity among gun owners and members alike in Gainesville at the time. Cook's expedition passed through this region on their way back from Cuba in November 1795. Captain John Smith also visited this area in 1797 during his exploration of the Gulf of Mexico as part of his mapping expedition led by Spanish Governor Manuel de la Vega y Costilla. This area had been inhabited by Native American groups for many thousands of years before white settlement begandocumented by explorer Hernando de Soto in 1540 A.D.. One account suggests that early explorers may have seen a manatee swimming near what is now downtown Gainesville; this sighting would later be connected with an Englishman named George Coppell who landed on Pensacola Island opposite Stonington Bay on February 2nd 1606 while exploring Pensacola Bayou for potential trade with Spain.– By 1836 much of what was east side (northwest corner) and south side (southwest corner) of present day downtown consisted of swampy lowlands bordered only occasionally by high ridges or bluffs reaching 350 feet or more above mean sea level., East Side: these lands extended northwest to about southwest corner intersection with Main Street and South Campus Road then west 1/2 miles along Railroad tracks northeast to intersecting intersection with Indian Trail just west side Rattlesnake Creek thence northwesterly along Indian Trail to original northeast corner where it stopped.– West Side: these lands extent southeast from Main Street intersection northeasterly until junction with railroad tracks at SW Corner lot line then south easterly one mile until Junction With US Highway 1 just south side Intracoastal Waterway; In 1837 Alford Wilkinson purchased all rights within present day Gainesville township including land east side (northwest corner) and south side (southwest corner)of present day downtown from Wilkinson's brother Isaac Alford Wilkinson Jr.. In 1838 Wilkinson built a sawmill on the stream running through today’s east campus lawn which became known as “Alford Mill Stream” Today’s mill building can still be seen across Cemetery Road from where Enterprise truck stop once stood Shortly after he acquired the patent Wilkinson set out to improve agricultural production within this newly annexed territory Although some early settlers did attempt farming some acreage actually reverted back to swampiness over time….. For most residents agriculture remained their primary occupation until well into the 20th century As late as 1907 only 5% percent Ownership Of Land Was Agricultural….Today almost all current residential areas within town limits date back prior To World War II …Most business activity occurred inside town limits which remains true even today although annexation created several new neighborhoods outside town boundaries………..A small number subsistence farmers continued operations off-grid Even into recent days….. Today approximately 60% Of Residents Are Business Owners And 40% Remain Agricultural….As mentioned earlier today there are three active high school districts within city limits – District 2 includes parts of central gainesville including Alford Mill Stream neighborhood; District 3 includes eastern edge neighbourhoods adjacent to Jacksonville airport; andDistrict 4 encompasses portions located near Enterprise truck stop
