Gainesville, Florida is a city located in the state of Florida. It was founded by the Seminole tribe in 1836 and it became a town in 1853. The first gun store opened in Gainesville on Meeting Street in 1892. The first shooting range opened in Gainesville on Old Sanford Road in 1927. In 1949, the United States Congress passed the National Firearms Act which outlaws all handguns except those registered with government agencies. On January 5, 1950, the Gun Control Act of 1968 was passed which made it illegal to possess any handgun without a license from a county sheriff or police officer. Within two years after that, it was also banned to sell handguns without an appropriate license. As of 2019, there are still no laws against purchasing or owning handguns for personal use within Gainesville City limits!

It is part of the Orlando–Daytona Beach–Boca Raton Metropolitan Statistical Area. Gainesville is home to the University of Central Florida and its affiliated colleges and universities. The first human settlement in what is now Gainesville was made byCaptain James Cook on his second visit to the area in 1794. At that time it consisted of a small post office with six settlers, one Indian chief, and three hogsira (pumpkin patches). A few years later Captain James Cook's men set up a trading post on what is now Elm Street near State Road 98A about two miles east of present-day Gainesville. That post served as a base for trade with Native Americans until 1810 when British traders replaced American traders as the dominant force in this region. In 1818 Mexico acquired US rights to California from Spain as part of their cession of that country; under Mexican rule California became part of Mexico proper while Gainesville remained an English colony known as "Spanish Town". In 1821 Congress created Seminole County out of parts of Spanish Town and Orange County; Gainesville was included within Seminole County although geographically it was located outside the county boundaries. On November 15, 1832 Florida statehood occurred when General Andrew Jackson signed legislation admitting Florida into the Union as a slave state;Florida Governor Osceola issued an order proclaiming November 16th – generally celebrated today as Hispanic Heritage Day – as "Gainesville Day". Gainesville is a city in central Florida, United States. The population was 51,827 at the 2010 census. Gainesville is one of the most populous cities in the state of Florida and one of its most important economic engines. On July 4, 1907, it became the first city in Florida to be incorporated as a municipio. It has since grown rapidly, becoming a major metropolitan area with over 100,000 residents by 2006. In that year, Gainesville was also selected as the site for what would become known as the University of Florida. Located on an 850-acre (340 hectare) campus near Lake Allatoona and just south of Interstate 95, UF has been an important educational institution since 1892 and remains highly influential in northeast Florida today. The history of Gainesville goes back much earlier than this – to Indian wordage era through Seminole Indian acquisition from Spain in 1763 AD when Fort Moultrie was founded on present day US Highway 1 near where present day State Road 12 meets SR 742 about 6 miles east northwest of town center on Pinellas County land acquired from Spanish royal grants dating back to 1665 AD! A post office called Gainesville had been established in 1836 by general James Wilkinson under military occupation following Creek Uprising against Spanish forces at Tallahassee Bayou! The first permanent white settlers arrived in 1840 when John Swanton moved from Georgia with his family into what is now downtown Gainesville after purchasing 5 acres (2 ha) on which he built a log cabin! A millstream ran down SW corner of SW lot at NW corner 3 NNW Lot across SW lot to SW lot were lots were sold beginning Nov 10 1830 !! Many early years some logs were collected during Spring floods making possible build carts & wagons for carrying goods over long distances !! In 1851/52 various tracts totaling 640 acres (250 ha) were surveyed and purchased by George Bird Griggs who named it “Gainesville Township” due to its location adjacent to his plantation outside Savannah GA!! This township then included parts or all of today’s City limits including north side SE corner Wagon Wheel Rd & E side SE Corner MLK Jr Blvd; current intersection between Gulf Freeway Business Loop & I-95

The town grew rapidly after it became a stop on the Underground Railroad and attracted many slaves to its prosperity. In 1865, Gainesville became part of the Confederate States of America during the American Civil War. After the war, Gainesville quickly increased its population and began to become known as "The City of Roses." In 1924, Gainesville annexed areas of Tallahassee and Bartow counties to form what is now known as Florida's capital city.
