Gainesville is a city in Florida, United States. The population was 57,611 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Volusia County and part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Daytona Beach Combined Statistical Area. Gainesville is located on I-4 Exit 104 and State Road 906, about 15 miles (24 km) northeast of Orlando. The area that now makes up Gainesville was first settled by Seminole people in the early 1800s. A cattle or slave market then sprang up on what is now University Boulevard and Orange Street, where buyers could buy African Americans as laborers or slaves for sale to other settlers in central Florida. In 1821, Captain James Hogg bought land near present-day Gainesville from the Seminole people for $2,500. The town's name was derived from "Gainesville Place", which Hogg named after General Andrew Jackson's headquarters during his Creek War against the Seminoles in 1818. In 1827, a group ofUF students founded an agricultural college called Jacksonville Agricultural College (later Jacksonville University). The town started to grow around this institution and saw its first growth spurt with the arrival of white settlers in 1830. At that time, Gainesville consisted mainly of small farmers and their families who grew cotton and other crops; there were no shops nor any businesses until after 1840 when a store opened on Orange Street by Jno Thomas Rankin which became one of Gainesville's most important landmarks until it burned down in 1893. In 1840, Gainesville had only 5 residents out of a total population over 10,000 living within 1 mile (1 km) radius for all purposes including voting; by 1850 however, there were over 25 residents living within 1 mile radius for all purposes including voting with a total population over 30% black! By 1860 census there were just 12 residents leftCircumstances changed little during Reconstruction as African Americans continued to be disenfranchised following Reconstruction – they remained propertyless gentlefolk without voting rights while white citizens enjoyed full access to education and jobs opportunities both inside and outside the country ! On July 14th 1870 UF’s first football team played their home game against Easley High School coached by Wm Sledge who led them to victory 34-0 Over sixty years later UF’s newest football program has made history winning back-to-back national championships! That same year UF also became one of only four universities nationally approved to field varsity baseball teams! In 1889 construction began on Alumni Hall which would house Student Union building along with many classrooms/hallways leading off into single story buildings on campus today known as “Old Main” Buildings such as Old Main are significant not just because they are old but also because they are still used today for classes/student housing etc…Alumni Hall served as homecoming courtrooms from 1895 until 1971 before moved indoors due to damage caused by Hurricane Andrew In 1973 UF reopened Alumni Hall originally built in 1889 weather permitting What followed were some very exciting times as UA Students formed Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity & sorority Sorrvations still continue at University OfFlorida even though we currently reside in Tallahassee
