Gainesville is a city in Florida, United States. The population was 21,549 at the 2010 census. Gainesville is one of the most populous cities in Florida and it is also one of the largest cities on the Tampa Bay Area. The University of Florida campus is located in Gainesville and has a total enrollment of over 100,000 students. The area that now includes Gainesville was first settled by Indian tribes in what is today central Tallahassee County. In 1819, Seminole Chief Osceola led an attack against Spanish colonists, resulting in the death of more than 200 Spanish settlers and their families. When Spain ceded Florida to America in 1763, Gainesville became part of what would become Jacksonville Township. In 1837, Jacksonville Township was renamed to Old Sanford after General James Wilkinson who had helped Allenby gain control over Creek territory east of Alabama during the Mexican–American War (1846-48). After Old Sanford's death in 1854, new Sanford Townsite was surveyed and developed around Fort Brown which served as a military post until 1861 when it was abandoned due to Union forces occupying Jacksonville Township during the American Civil War (1861-65). For many years prior to this time there were no permanent settlements or businesses within present day downtown Gainesville because access to land and water were limited by strategic position on Lake Erie on two forks within present day Polk County. On November 15th 1840, Isaac Hill established a small town called Eustis on high ground near modern-day Citrusville south of where US 41 crosses I-4 just west of Gadsden Mall. On February 17th 1841 Confederate Major General James Longstreet attacked Hill'stown with heavy artillery from his entrenched positions at Dawson's Mill Road about 12 miles north northeast of modern day Eustis; although inflicting minor losses upon Confederate forces under Longstreet's command few residents chose to fight against him instead opting for flight or neutrality rather thansubmit themselves to combat; this event marked only one phaseofa long struggle between Scotsmen desiring political autonomy while Southern whites sawEustis as another exampleof howforward progress could be made if they united behinda common causein their Rebellionagainst British rule Aftermath: On November 15th 1840 Isaac Hill established a small town called Eustis on high ground near modern day Citrusville south of where US 41 crosses I-4 just west of Gadsden Mall; following its establishment approximately 150 people lived and worked there before being forced out by Williamsburgers associated with nearby Stono Ferry about 3 miles SE Williamsburgers began moving into Eustis circa 1800s as cotton farmers relocated from Georgia &Tennessee seeking better soil quality &marketability for their crops; some early inhabitants left for economic reasons such as religious conversion(From Baptist Missionary Society missionary Reverend John Capps)following passage Of Ulysses S Grant Proclamation encouraging all men above eighteen years old In South Carolina To Settleville From Which Place They May Go And purchase Land . . . however most later arrivals decided notto leaverainy areas butrather annexed partsOf surrounding counties including Etowah Valley creating much controversy among locals over interlocking jurisdictions/administration It should be noted that these early settlers did not establish any townsite adjacent thereto nor did they invite nonresidential development; moreover George Washington Ellis foundedStono Ferry Landing about 1 mile SW OF EUSTIS shortly thereafter providing transportation link between Stono Ferry Landing &the Duckworth Plantation which lay immediatelyNW OF EUSTIS
