In 1901, the first USMA garrison was erected in Gainesville and it remained an active military installation until the end of World War II. The USMA's presence in Gainesville was formalized with the establishment of a Military Intelligence School in 1951. From 1951 to 1957, the school accommodated a brigade-sized detachment of U.S. Marines from Marine Barracks, Jacksonville, Florida. In 1958, during the Vietnam War era, two brigades of U.S Marines were sent to Gainesville as part of Operation Neptune's Spear and they stayed until 1971 when they returned home Deployed again for Operation Desert Storm in 1991-1992; however this time their brigade size was increased to three brigades and they remain stationed at Marine Barracks today

Gainesville, Florida is a city in Alachua County, Florida, United States. The population was 54,748 at the 2010 census. Gainesville is the county seat of Alachua County and home to Central State University. It became a city on December 3, 1892 after it was annexed by Jacksonville. The first human inhabitants of what is now Gainesville were Creek Indians who lived along the banks of the Suwannee River. In 1823 French explorer Francois Legault founded Fort Legault on land that would later become Gainesville. A year later Englishman John Lawson Purchased land adjacent to Fort Legault and built his residence there called "Lawson's Plantation." In 1827 Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto discovered and named Gainesville after General James Wilkinson, commander of American forces in Cuba during the Seminole Wars. George Washington Key went from America to meet Wilkinson atgainesville in 1830 as part of Key's quest for information about Cuban unsettlements led by Governor Juan Pablo Fernandez de la Rosa y Arellano. At first renamed Gualdia (now Stonington), Gualdia was again renamed Gainesville in 1832 when Jacksonville became a part of US Airways created by US president Andrew Johnson under his anti-trust policy known as "The Sherman Antitrust Act".
