As the Gainesville Civic Club continues its centennial year, it is important to reflect on the history of the National Guard in Gainesville. The club was founded in 1906 by business men and civic leaders, including J.M. Dent and Wm. Hickey, as a way for city residents to come together and support their local military unit. The first National Guard unit in Gainesville was organized on November 6, 1907 under the command of Captain John A. Gentry Jr. The unit consisted of fifty-six soldiers, who were paid $5 per month plus food and clothing. As time passed, more units were formed and eventually there were over one hundred soldiers assigned to the City Guardsmen Battalion (later called the Florida Army National Guard). Throughout World War I and World War II, squads or companies of Florida Guardsmen served in various capacities including rifle platoon leader training at Ft. McClellan; field artillery duties at Fort Dix; service as escorts for supply trains through hostile territory; anti-aircraft defense duty near Apalachicola Bay; Civilian Conservation Corps work on Lake Okeechobee;and guard duty during Hurricane Floyd in 1999. In 1946, after years of discussion between President Harry S Truman’s Commission on Post-War Reconstruction and Mayor Johnnie L White’s committee chaired by Drs. Ernest Poole and Solomon Feldblum Jr., the George C Marshall Presidential Executive Order No 564 established “the Florida Army National Guard” as an arm of state government with headquarters located in Tallahassee until 1959 when they moved into what is now known as Building 801 North State Street within Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakeland (JBLL) complex across from Regions Bank Plaza). Gainesville is a city in Florida, United States. The population was 30,876 at the 2010 census. Gainesville is the county seat of Alachua County and part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. It is also adjacent to Tampa and St Petersburg. The first permanent European settlers in what is now Gainesville were Frenchmen who arrived on horseback from Louisiana in 1764. They named their new settlement after Spain's governor of Cuba, Don José de la Vega y Ayala, who had accompanied them on their journey there. By 1800, Gainesville had become an important trade center for the surrounding region because it was located on navigable waterways accessible by sea and land. In 1833, Colonel James A. Wilkinson established a military post here that became known as Fort Wilkinson; headed by Wilkinson until his death in 1836, this fort served as a key base for Ulysses S. Grant's Creek Campaigns against Seminole Indian separatists and General Andrew Jackson's forces during the American Civil War (1812-1865). In 1881, Gainesville was annexed by Jacksonville; since then it has been its own municipality with its own government and economy separate from that of Jacksonville proper. In 1928, Gainesville absorbed parts of Lake Wales into its municipal boundaries; today that community still falls within the limits of Gainesville proper but provides services to both municipalities including public schools and fire protection service. On November 5th 1898 – one hundred years after Spanish explorer Hernando Cortez landed near what is now downtown Gainesville – Florida State University opened its doors to students under Instructional Agreement No 1 with The University of Havana (UH) prior to statehood in 1907 under Article VIII Section 2 of the ConstitutionofFlorida For more than 50 years FSU has had a central role in providing world-class education opportunities for Floridians across all racial backgrounds through research advances which include: engineering/industrial/medical programs as well as law enforcement/peacekeeping academies etc.; our campus has been home to some Heisman Trophy winners such as Ozzie Newsome (QB), Randy Moss (WR) & Keyshawn Johnson (TE). The city reached its peak during the turn of the century, with growth totaling more than 60,000 residents by 1907.
