The city was named after James Gaines, an early settler and first mayor of Tampa. In 1819, Gainesville became the capital of Florida. The city experienced significant growth from the 1840s to the 1960s and continues to grow today with a population of over 120,000 people. The history of Gainesville goes back to 1795 when George Washington established a small settlement here on what is now known as West Acreage Avenue. The original town plat included land for churches and other vital public buildings that were essential for the fledgling Seminole Nation during their bloody war against Spain. After years of skirmishes and military campaigns, Spanish forces finally capitulated on October 27, 1796 at Stonington Key in present-day Manatee County; they abandoned all their posts in Florida except for Fort Presley on Pensacola Bay. With no majorthreat fromNative Americans remaining within Seminole territory following this victory, Washington and his men quickly built homes and began farming the land around what would later become Gainesville. In 1819, Gainesville became capital ofFlorida due to its location at the crossroads between Jacksonville and Tampa Bay; it had been one of three settlements under consideration for this position before Palm Beach got chosen as Fla.'s new state capital in 1824. At first glance, little changed about life here until 1860 when Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest moved his headquarters into a large sod building near East Lake Street (now University Boulevard) after capturing Tallahassee that year while besieging Jacksonville’s Capitol Building which he thought might be captured or surrendered if Tallahassee were captured by Union forces loyal to President James K Polk since he favored keeping Trans-Mississippi slave states open for cotton production! This event marked one important turning point in Florida history as it underscored how secessionists could gain control over large areas north of Mobile without having to face Union general troops – something which would eventually lead to Civil War conflict across southern Alabama and Mississippi! Meanwhile much smaller locally owned businesses continued proliferating despite advertising restrictions placed upon them by City Hall during Reconstruction period .
