Gainesville is a city in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 38,521 at the 2010 census. Gainesville is part of the Tampa–St Petersburg–Clearwater Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is located on Florida's Gulf Coast and has been a major cultural and commercial center for the region for more than 100 years. The first permanent settlement in what is now Gainesville was made by Captain John Stroud and his party of English adventurers on July 24, 1764, during their attempt to travel from Georgia to Pensacola. After reaching Martinique on October 12 that year, they began surveys of the area around present-day Gainesville and recommended that it be named for George Washington as its "chief gatherer of Indian buffaloes." On February 18, 1765, Washington granted a charter to James Robertson (1712–79), one of America's first land speculators and investors. Under this new charter, Robertson founded the Town of Gainesville on November 3, 1765. The town became an important stop on radial routes linking eastward via Savannah with Westward via Tallahassee and Mobile Bay; it also served as a crossroads for traders travelling between these three regions. In 1813, Gainesville was annexed by Tallahassee after its own municipal government was created there following passage of the state Legislature's Constitution Revision Act (1811). At that time – beforegainesville had any streets or buildings – most citizens gathered around courthouse square near today's University Avenue to hear petitions being presented to the legislature by local farmers seeking relief from high taxes levied against them by Tallahassee officials. These hearings were often followed by public demonstrations in support or opposition to proposed legislation; such events helped develop into later political traditions in gainesville."
