Greenacres, Florida is a small town in Broward County, Florida on the eastern edge of Palm Beach County. The population was 7,624 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit Greenacres were the Spanish explorers in 1513 and 1514. A grant from King Henry VIII of England in 1666 gave rise to Greenacres Plantation, which became an important citrus production center during Reconstruction Era America. In 1868, Clearwater Canal was completed connecting Tampa Bay with Lake Okeechobee and led to increased agricultural production and development around Greenacres. During World War II, many people from Greenacres worked on nearby airfields such as Dow Chemical Plant #1 (now called Dow Chemical Co.), Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood Airport (#3), and Plant #2 at Pompano Beach; all were destroyed by fire or bombing during the war. In 1960, John F Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas while he attended a campaign rally at Fair Park Stadium; his assassin shot him three times just outside the stadium's gates before fleeing without killing Kennedy. For years thereafter rumors circulated that Lee Harvey Oswald may have been behind Kennedy's assassination - some believe that this theory may have been inspired by reports that greenACRES plants had been used as cover for some time preceding JFK's death

Greenacres is a census-designated place in Brevard County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,836 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Jacksonville Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Greenacres" is derived from Indian Chief Osceola's warning to his followers that they would not live long if they killed all the white people living around him and then gathered all their plants and built their homes on them. The first settler in what is now Greenacres was James Hickey who came overland from Georgia in 1841. He named his tract of land "Hickey's Prairie." In 1845, entrepreneur John Waddell developed a large plot of land along the St Johns River near today's intersection of US 6 and Old State Road 488 known as Hwy. 128 or Jacksonville Landing. Waddell named his property Greenacres after a small grove of palm trees he saw while driving across the river on his horseback ride one day in 1840. In 1846, Joeseph Purdy bought 10 acres (4 ha) adjacent to Waddell's for $100 and began developing it into a farmstead called Purdyville which became an important stop on stagecoach routes between Jacksonville and Fort Myers beachfront businesses such as Captiva Beach Ferry landing and Turtle Bayou trading post beginning in 1850s. In 1857, Elisha Kirkpatrick purchased 640 acres (249 ha) including much of what is now Greenacres from James Averill for $10 per acre ($2/ha). In 1865, Confederate General Robert Ewell siegeaded nearby Fort Morgan before invading Mobile County to begin its campaign against Ulysses S Grant leading to Sherman’s march through Florida culminating at Tallahassee with Lee’s surrender at Appomattox Court House that same year which ended Reconstruction in America south of Mason-Dixon lineTallahassee: On April 9th 1865 General Robert Ewell surrendered Camp Johnson east of town to Brigadier General William Troup who Commanded Fourth Brigade Confederate Army Corps Headquarters & moved thence by wagon train across country to Tallahassee Alabama where he arrived about 9 p.m., April 10th 1865 With Cheatham commanding Third Brigade Cavalry Division operating rearward I relieved Troup & withdrew my command backcrossing county lines USA
