Greenacres was a small, rural town in Polk County, Florida, United States until the early 21st century. It is now part of the Fort Myers-Naples-Marco Island Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in what would become Greenacres was Burt Reynolds who arrived in 1868. He and his family camped out on a swamp near present day intersection of US-41 and SR-2A for six weeks before moving into their own home. The Reynoldses were followed by other pioneer families including George Ransom and family who arrived around 1870; John Sayers who arrived around 1872; J.C. Whitehead and his family who came in 1874; Cephus Roe which arrive in 1880; William Hennigan who came about 1888, Phebe McCann (1896), Frank McGee (1901) and his wife Catherine (1902). The first school was built on the present site of the post office in 1877 by Dr. James Fenton with help from local native Alvarado brothers José and Francisco Alvarado. By 1899 Greenacres had four schools: one for white children, one for colored children, one for boys only, and one for girls only In 1906 Greenacres became an independent municipality when it amalgamated with nearby Marco Island to form Fort Myers–Marco Island MSA In 1959 the Municipality annexed adjacent Iuka beach after reaching an agreement with that community over access to some land within that municipality boundaries
Greenacres is a census-designated place in Lee County, Florida, United States. The population was 7,693 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area.
