Greenacres is an unincorporated community located in Polk County, Florida, United States. It is a census-designated place (CDP) and the population was 1,824 as of the 2010 census. The area where Greenacres now stands was first settled by Seminoles in the early 1800s. The name "Greenacres" likely comes from the Everglades which were until recently a difficult to access and hunt because they are so swampy. After white settlers arrived in this area around 1885, they began clearing land for farming purposes and built churches and homes. The first post office at Greenacres was established on February 12, 1886, by J.M. Hynes. At that time it served as part of Polk County. The first settler to live in Greenacres was John Gertz who arrived around 1895. He had two families living there before moving away in 1905 when he bought a tract of land east of town with the intent of creating a village there called Gertzville which never happened due to lack of money or interest from other investors). In 1907, Gold Rush fever set in throughout central Florida and many people fled westward into Mexico City during that period of excitement looking for gold discoveries along the way; however not all residents left their homes behind when they traveled to Mexico City for work reasons only 2% returned home once their visas expired; most went on business trips or took root permanently elsewhere among friends back home within weeks or less after returning stateside (i.e., Sanford did not leave his job near Mexican American University [LAU] south of downtown Miami)). Greenacres is a small town in Broward County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,671 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood area. The first settlement in what is now Greenacres was made on November 15, 1867 by Wm. Hamer and James Gadsden while they were surveyors for the US Army Corps of Engineers. They named their new community after General John C. Fremont's army brigade that had fought at the Battle of Buena Vista on October 17, 1847. The first post office was opened in 1868 under the name "Old Fort Greene". A schoolhouse and general store were built in 1870 by Jno. Fenton and his wife Esther; a water tower was erected in 1876 and a fire station built in 1903. In 1896, Hermann Riege bought 1/4 section of land from John Sievers for $1,000 to establish a citrus orchard there which he called "Riege's Citrus Farm". At that time it was one of only two orchards ever established outside Eastern Europe with fruits such as oranges and apples being grown exclusively hereabouts because Miami did not have any trees suitable for growing fruit until after World War II when tree nurseries became available to growers throughout South Florida Riege continued to operate his orchard until his death in 1954 In 1921 Ethel Mosely started packing fresh produce into boxes for delivery to local stores called "Moses' baskets" after her husband Moses Berlin who ran a grocery store near Greenacres before moving to Hollywood . After her death in 1951 the business passed through several owners before becoming operated by Mary Jo Whitehead who purchased it from Mrs. Whitehead’s daughter-in-law Lynn Steininger in 1984 In 1990 it again passed through several hands before being purchased by longtime resident Rick Kiesel who has run it since 1993 as Green Acres Markets Incorporated . As of 2011 its licensed producer status has been changed from grower to processor In addition to its namesake fruit products - including green apples - Green Acres also produces grapefruit (both sweet types and tart types), honeydews (a type of bee hive honey), quinces (a type of apple) and peaches It is home to an annual parade that features floats depicting different kinds of agriculture along with local businesses represented

The community was founded by Irish immigrants in 1879 as "Chesnee". They named it Greenacres after nearby (then still part of) Gainesville and because of its shade trees which grew plentifully there. In 1903, the community became an incorporated village with a school and post office. In 1926, the name was changed to Greenacres for fear that another community called Chesnee would become too popular and be taken up by locals and businesses.
