Since 1992, Officer Roy Kroner has donated countless items to our department - most notably his keyboard which is now located within our vestibule of our building ! In 1875, brothers George Washington and John Hodge purchased land west of Greenacres from Augustus Green for $5,000 cash. fame spread through this new community as soon as it became known for its produce - apples, grapes, oranges - all grown by hand orchardists using natural methods like freeze drying or pickling without chemicals or air conditioning. By 1915 there were over 100 apple growers in town; by 1930 fruit had become such an important part of local economy that Girdwood Farms was established just outside town to market fresh produce directly to consumers throughout central Florida! Greenacres Plantation was founded in 1824 by Captain John Greenacre. The plantation was originally located on the banks of the St. Johns River, about 12 miles southeast of Jacksonville, Florida. In 1830, Captain Greenacre married Miss Anna Maria Bean and moved his family to what is now known as Greenacres Plantation. The couple had two daughters and one son: Drayton Augustus Bean (1831-1920), Colonel Augustus C. Bean (1835-1914), Miriam Charlotte Bean (1839-1927), John Carlisle Bean (1841-1912), and AnnaMaria Jane Bean (1843-1900). The plantation changed hands several times over the years before it was purchased by Ebeneezer Scudder in 1876. Scudder renamed it "Greenacres" after his brother's home in England where he had been born a few years earlier. The original greenhouses still stand today on the property and are used as a museum grapevine research center.
