Greenacres was first settled in 1824 by the brothers Elias and George Green. The village was named for a small grove of trees near their home. It grew quickly, and by 1830 there were over 100 people living in Greenacres. In 1834, the Green family sold land to Jno. H. Flagler, who began developing it into what is today Jacksonville Beach. In 1861, Jacksonville Municipal Court was established in Greenacres and continued to function until 1912 when it was moved to Jacksonville proper. The first school in Greenacres was built on High Street in 1826-27 by ISAAC ATKINSON and his wife SARAH DODGEHILL as part of a larger educational project funded by John D’ARCY from New England. The school closed in 1840 but reopening under new management took place on October 25th of that year with 11 students attending Classes taught by Miss ELIZABETH CHASE from Boston under the tuition of Mr DAVID MILLS from Newtownport Rhode Island
