The Gulfport Air Force Base is a joint base of the United States Air Force and the Kuwaiti military. It is located in Gulfport, Mississippi and was opened on 2 January 1947. The air force has an active duty population of over 36,000 people including 11,000 pilots and officers. Gulfport AFB is home to three wings: The 1st Wing which provides airlift for Operation Desert Storm; The 2nd Wing which provides aerial refueling support for coalition operations in Southwest Asia; And The 3rd Wing which provides fighter training for gulfstream jet interceptors. Additionally, there are two satellite facilities at GAFB: One providing data link services through the Internet to other USAF bases worldwide, while the other houses one of Missile Command's six test ranges used for missile testing. The origins of Gulfport AFB date back to World War I when it was established as General Order No. 527 which directed that all bombing forces be placed at Lawrence Army Air Field (LAAF). On 1 December 1942 LAAF became known as RAF Fort Worth AAF after Major General James Fenton USAAF who served as Deputy Commander-in-Chief., RAF Fort Worth during World War II. It operated under RAF Bomber Command until its closure on 7 May 1946 following the war. Inactivated on 28 September 1949 with 446 aircraft from 35 squadrons in 21 groups it became an inactive general aviation airport under FAA control with a single runway serving five passenger airlines - American Airlines (AAL),Delta Airlines (DAL), Northwest Airlink (NWA) and Southern Airways (SAUV). With its single runway it was also limited to helicopter flights only although this changed in 1958 when Gulfport AFB received its first Douglas DC-9s and began providing international scheduled service to Miami/New York City JFK Airport using Southeast Airlines' Boeing 747s leased from American Airlines Incorporated (AAL) . At that time Gulfport AFB had become one of America’s leading hurricane evacuation centers due to its well-developed airport infrastructure capable of handling large volumes of evacuees quickly and easily with minimal damage or inconvenience to local residents

Gulfport is a city in southern Mississippi, United States. The population was 37,813 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Gulf County. The first Europeans to visit the Gulf Coast were French traders and missionaries who landed on the coast in 1665–66. In 1821, Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto explored and mapped much of what is now the Gulf Coast before his disastrous expedition that lost many lives and valuable resources. In 1861, after President Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation made slavery illegal in all but a few Confederate states, planters from Alabama began moving into coastal Mississippi to cultivate rice plantations and mine coal for export. By 1870, cotton had become the leading crop on these plantations; however, saltpetre extraction became increasingly important due to its natural sulfur content which gave it an odoriferous distinguishing feature among other local commodities. This led to another name change for this area – "Gulfport" – reflecting its growing importance as an industry and trade center following Spain's withdrawal from what is now Louisiana in 1803. When New Orleans became an international port in 1817 with passage of the Northwest Passage through Arctic ice pack by Captain James Cook, interest developed in developing transportation links between New Orleans and points northward via navigable waterways such as Mobile Bayou (now known as bayous d'Alma) or Lake Pontchartrain (now Chalmette). A canal was initially planned connecting Mobile Bayou with Lake Pontchartrain but never built because of financial problems caused by changes in government policy related to navigation boons (such as exclusive rights to navigate Hudson's Bay Company canals). In 1827 Stephen Austin gained exclusive US shipping rights off Texas' coast for twenty years until Mexican claims were satisfied; during this time he named one of his wharves at Matagorda Point "Houston". When Mexico ceded Texas back to America in1848 Houston reverted its name back to Galveston; however, over time it reverted again back to Galveston until it was finally abandoned by Congress upon Mexican independence on April 6th, 1901 when Galveston officially became a city once again*.

In 1912, the USAF gifted their 2nd airplane, the Wrights’ White airship. In 1917, after World War I ended and Congress created an Air Corps as part of newly formed America, The USAF gave away 7 planes: 4 bombers (the Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress), 1 light bomber (the Boeing P-8A Poseidon), and 3 fighter planes (the Lockheed F-4 Phantom II).
