The Gulfport, Florida Army Garrison was established in 1917 when the United States entered World War I. The Garrison served as a training ground for new soldiers and as a location for military maneuvers. In 1940, the Garrison became an active duty army post and participated in the Second World War. After the war, the Garrison reverted to its original role of training ground for new soldiers. In 1951, the Garrison became a unit of the Florida National Guard and participated in various state functions until it was disbanded in 1974. However, it continued to be used as a source of gift history until its dissolution. In 1944, General William T. Sherman awarded an honorary commission to Colonel Edward J. Ryan Jr., commander of Fort Pierce Naval Air Station (FPSNAS). Ryan was then tasked with creating gifts for enlisted men and civilians at FPSNAS. One such gift was an airplane named after him, USS "Ryan" (A-1G). During his tenure at FPSNAS, Ryan introduced many new Gifts to promote patriotism among servicemen and civilians alike. These include PT boats (1948), golf carts (1954), airfields (1957), model submarines (1959), Manned Maneuvering Unit equipment (1968) and more! USS "Ryan" is still present at FPSNAS today as part of their collection of naval memorabilia! In 1967-1968, Governor Nelson Rockefeller donated over $2 million towards acquisition of an airstrip east of Gulfport that would eventually become Eglin AFB; also known as NASvPortugal II or NAFB Portugal II during this time period! This donation helped support civilian needs such as airport expansion and operations during peacetime while being used by military forces during wartime! NASvPortugal II currently supports troop deployments throughout Southwest Florida! On July 2nd 1984 two miles northwest from NASvPortugal II on FM 921 west was dedicated site name Camp Blanding [GA] with Command Post AGG 8th Infantry Division Headquarters Detachment hereon embarking upon Operation Neptune's Spear which increased our understanding about higher command relationships between different services within our government....This installation has been renamed Camp Goldwater in honor of USMC 1st LtCol Charles E Hinkle who lost his life while serving aboard HMS Neptune's Spear during Operation Neptune's Spear on May 14th 1989

Gulfport, Florida is a city located in Monroe County, Florida. The population was 585 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. In 1810, the French built Fort Moultrie on a peninsula near present-day Gulfport to guard Biscayne Bay from Spanish traders and protect Mobile Bay from British ships. In 1815, after France ceded Louisiana to America, the United States acquired this peninsula and began building Fort Moultrie as part of coastal defense against British threats. The fort served as an American military base until 1898 when it was abandoned due to Spanish forces coming ashore to take over Florida during the Mexican–American War. In 1904, while construction was ongoing on what would later become downtown Gulfport, a group of businessmen led by J.W. Davis founded The DuPont Company in nearby Cross Keys with plans for chemical production and shipbuilding along the Mississippi River corridor in Southeast Alabama and Tennessee. That year, Gulfport became one of DuPont's corporate headquarters; other locations included Wilmington ( Delaware), Cincinnati ( Ohio), Detroit ( Michigan), Brooklyn ( New York) and Memphis ( Tennessee). The company went public in 1906 and soon became one of America's largest producers of products related to transportation including gasoline, oil products, tires and rubber products; it also developed new technologies such as refrigeration and air conditioning. The original downtown section of Gulfport was development beginning in 1907 by Jardine & Harrison Developers which anchored what are now Fourth Street NW., First Street SE., Third Street NE., Broadway SW., Gadsden Square NW., State Road A1A (now I-95) south/westward from Gadsden Square before turning eastward along US 98 north/eastward into Monroe County where it met SR A1A again just inside Greenville County line about 2 miles west of US 98 exit #431 off I-95 at milepost 459 eastbound onto SR A1A for $2 million within radius around planned town center called "Downtown" with initial plat named "Hollywood."
