As part of Operation Magic Carpet, Japanese forces invaded America on December 7, 1941 and began occupying much of Southeast Asia including USS Missouri (BB-38) which was anchored off Pier 2 in downtown Gulfport. Because Japan had no legal right to occupy any part of America after it declared war against America, USS Missouri remained moored off Pier 2 until May 1942 when she sailed for Pearl Harbor with her remaining crew members underpowered after being converted into an oil tanker by refitting her as a floating barracks ship for Japanese prisoners-of-war known as "The Virgin Islands". At first glance, nothing appears to have changed since 1945 when writer Don Freeman visited Gulfport while living there as an advertising executive with Healey Incorporated; however progress has been made both economically and politically since then which can be seen in various aspects of local life such as education, economy and social services unavailable or difficult to find outside larger metropolitan areas such as Jacksonville or Tampa Bay.
