Gulfport is a city located in Bay County, Florida, United States. The population was 507 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. Gulfport has been known for its cotton and seafood industries since it was founded as a small town in 1837 by native Floridians. The city's current name, Gulfport was given to it by Spanish traders after they discovered land that later became known as Gulfport Island. The island served as an anchorage for their ships during the early 1800s, and when the U.S. Civil War began in 1861, many of the local boats went into service to transport goods from Pensacola to Tampa Bay. After secession from the Union, most of Gulfport's shipping stopped due to lack of funding, but some continue until present day including US Coast Guard Cutter Northeast (CG-78) which patrols northeastern Alabama waters near Mobile Bay. In addition to its namesake industry, what set Gulfport apart from other coastal towns during its history were its many tropical forests and mangroves that dot the waterfronts; these forests were home to such iconic species as palm trees and egrets until they were hunted or logged off in the late 19th century. The first recorded mention of what would become Gulfport comes from Captain John Smith who explored East Florida around 1765 while on his way back from finding new lands east of HavanaBay he called "Island". By 1800 there was already a permanent community thriving with fishing villages along Pensacola bay where Indians fished for mullet and catfish then gathered fruit/veggies ashore for their families before sailing back out towards Cuba or Hispaniola (now Haiti) with their catch on board ship bound for Europe or America etc.. However this period soon came to an end following American Revolutionary War & France’s entry into war against England becoming involved leading Admiral Thomas Jefferson wrote “the trade between Spain & America must be discontinued because our country cannot support it [emphasis added]”& so ended one era but began another……….By 1827 there were two settlements: Spanish Fort on Key West side of Pensacola bay - primarily used by pirates led by Joaquin de la Vega y Arellano(a former slave trader) who established his fortification here; 2nd location lying inland on low ground just north of present day downtown GPTX square - this site had been under cultivation by Native Americans since prehistory calling it Tequesta meaning 'place where fruits grow'. In 1837 Felix Sprague organized 5 men together under protection of Captains Hernando De Soto named themselves 'Gulf Port Company' withSprague headquartering at Spanish Fort . They built wharfage yards & warehouses next door building dockside steamboats moored alongside brick piers providing cargo space inside & out onto arriving ships…..In 1840 Town Council voted against annexation request madeby Govt Wm Dixie – reason being fears about urban sprawl………………………………………In 1846 GPTX square was dedicated as City Hall Oval……………..In 1865 GPTX sq moved across Causeway from Spanish Fort – becoming Downtown GPTX………………………..Downtown GPTX includes all prior buildings south side Canal Street upriver including Mission Chapel built in 1836 replacement for St Andrews Presbyterian Church destroyed during Seminole War – now Cathedral Basilica……………………………………….Most recently re-zoned conditional use district #2 (industrial) making much needed employment opportunities available………………….Today Downtown GPTX continues To Serve As Home To Many important businesses including Airlines Boeing 747 Service Dept., Ford Motor Co.(1st dealership), Allstate Insurance company(2nd dealership), Bank Of America branch(3rd dealership).
The Gulfport area was first settled by the Kissimmee tribe in the late 17th century. The area was named for a nearby body of water, known then as the "Gulf of Mexico". By 1815, the town had grown to encompass about 50 acres (20 hectares). In 1824, the US Congress passed a bill establishing a constitutional government for Florida and created Fort Pierce as its capital. In 1845, when Jacksonville was founded, it annexed parts of Gulfport. The annexation led to some friction between the two cities because of their different histories and cultures. However, by 1865 both cities were consolidated into one municipality under common management. During World War II, Gulfport became an important manufacturing center for munitions production. After the war ended in 1945, it lost much of its economic activity due to decline in oil prices and population growth in Jacksonville. However, during recent years it has seen resurgence as a cultural center with several high-profile exhibitions held there including "Portrait" by American artist Jeff Koons and "Miami" by Cuban artist Fernando Botelho.
