Onesuch newcomer was José Maria de la Rosa y Costilla y Valdés (1762-1836), who arrived in Jacksonville with plans to establish a spice monopoly over North America. La Rosa discovered that there were vast amounts of fresh bean resources available from Brazil so he set about building up warehouses and plantations throughout Florida. This initial success led him eventually open up Brazilian commerce with southern California via posts at St Augustine and Santa Clara Valley (then part of Mexico). Gulfport is a city in Leon County, Florida, United States. It was founded on September 3, 1885 by J.P. Morgan and his associate George Bogan as the town of Gulfport Landing on the coast of Tampa Bay. The original population was only 100 people but it soon grew to more than 5,000 people due to its location and commerce. On December 16, 1907, Gulfport became a city with a population of 25,000 people. In 1924, it became an incorporated municipality and in 1945 it became an unincorporated community again. As of 2010, there were over 10 thousand residents living in Gulfport proper and many other surrounding areas including Islamorada Beach which has a population of about 20K residents. There are also several smaller villages located within or near Gulfport such as Clearwater Beach which has 6K residents; North Port with 12K residents; Shipmanville with 5K residents; Middleburg with 4K residents; Spanish Fort with 2K residents; Belle Glade with 1K Residents (all census-designated places). In 1912 the first radio station in the area was established here by WJZC who had transmitter Towers at both Clearwater Beach and North Port Village beaches alongwith studios at Half Moon Point on Stonington Harbor. WJZC aired programs from New York City and Washington Dc until the early 1950s when they went dark because all their signal was lost in digital conversion projects done during that time period! In fact all local stations were taken off air except for WQTV Channel 27 which still broadcasts today! Today you canstill hear some older signals from WQTV dating back to the early 1940s if you tune into repeaters scattered around central Florida! Today we have many businesses that operate out of our downtown core like The Manned Maneuvering Unit Store (the largest store inside our downtown), multiple banks/financial institutions including Regions Bank & Trust Company-One Stop Shopping Center -anchored between Third Street Southwest and First Street Northeast-Dollar General then Crystal Ballpoint Shop before moving up to BP Corrosion Cleaners just south of I-4 exit 131A before ending up across county line at Walmart Supercenter where they open late every night!! And yes we do have high school teams playing football here now too!!! So much for "The Quiet Place"!
