Gulfport is a city in Monroe County, Florida, United States. The population was 34,752 at the 2010 census. It is the largest municipality in Monroe County by population. Gulfport is bordered to the north by Monrovia and to the east by Gadsden City. The city has a total area of , of which (or 97%) is land and (or 3%) is water. The first settlers in Gulfport were three brothers who founded what would become known as Gulfport on November 29, 1872, when they landed their boat on what is now Bay Island after sailing from Mobile Bay. In 1903, Gulfport became an incorporated town with a land valuation of $2 million dollars ($102 million USD today). The original Main Street was built near present day Coliseum Drive and it was through this streets that people came to trade goods and services for food or other necessities during the early days of the town's growth. By 1907 there were over 100 businesses located along Main Street including groceries stores, banks, insurance companies and more. On October 12th 1906 two oil wells were drilled offshore from Ft Walton Beach in Duval County - one well being named "Well No 1" while Well No 2 became known as "Well No 3". As oilaki drilling increased throughout America due to discoveries made at Prudhoe Bay in Alaska and elsewhere during 1906-1910 many people began moving into coastal communities seeking opportunities for work or investment outside of their homes; however no such opportunity arose for those living within the limits of Port Royal Creek which lay between downtown Gulfport proper and Point Clear Naval Air Station less than half a mile away on Tampa Bay shoreline. A few notable exceptions were Manatee Co., FL physician Drs Wm Henson & Dr JF McGuire who opened practice at 1111 Third Ave #203A in 1911; Harry Crouch & Sons Cigar store at 915 First Ave #204A also soon followed suit but it wasn't until 1925 that Cadillac dealership Eddie Jordan opened his doors at 504 Fourth St #202B providing world class car service not found anywhere else before or since! This event helped jump start development around corner onto Mitchell Avenue with then current 4-story buildings housing most businesses/shops along Mitchell Ave starting with Citizen’s Bank building erected ca 1899 as part of new development just southwest corner of street on then current site now occupied by Medical Associates office complex! Though initial plans called for only two blocks long Mitchell Ave ran concurrently all the way to US 41 opposite Tallahassee Univ campus thru downtown industrial areas becoming one continuous shopping center bisected only by Cedar Key Freeway back then! Today large portions (~90%)of Mitchell Ave are privately owned commercial properties owner operated churches/mosques controlledinductions etc... prior planning efforts aimed primarily at attracting university students Faculty researchers staff scientists military construction workers local entrepreneurs (& women) & tourists resulting in significant loss/disappearance value both public & private lands close to major urban attractions!! Today almost everything within ½ mile boundaries of Downtown business district anchored either side of I-95 exit road provides some type Of commerical services!!! Some notable exceptions include: University Plaza Shopping Center located adjacent University Boulevard main entrance replaced several times over recent years multiple movie theaters chain restaurants autoZone petSmart Sears Hardware Store Auto Parts Warehouse Service Dept.... local small business owners have resisted attempts by mall developers ever since conversion from open air mall attiredGOODSMILE

Gulfport is a city in the Miami-Dade County, Florida metropolitan area and part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford metropolis. As of the 2010 census, its population was 226,711. The Greater Gulfport Urban Statistical Area had a population of 478,621 as of July 1, 2016. The city was founded on December 12, 1836 by Danish immigrants who named it for the gulf (or ocean) that separated them from Europe. The first post office in Gulfport was established on February 14, 1837. In 1853, John Fenton built what is now known as the Fenton House east of downtown to serve as a hotel and store for goods arriving at the port. By 1860 there were over 50 businesses in town and about 2200 people living there. That year also saw the opening of Gulfport’s first school – Mrs. Gertrude Biddle’s Female Academy – which became one of the largest white schools in Florida until well into the 20th century. In 1865 an Act providing for a public school system within Jackson County was passed by Congress and signed into law by President Abraham Lincoln; however local officials refused to participate because they felt that their land would be better used developing sugar plantations instead. In 1868 Jacksonville began construction of its own public school system which quickly grew into one of Florida’s most successful educational institutions during this time period with more than 6000 students enrolled grades pre-kindergarten through twelveth grade in 1895 when it merged with Gulfport’s school district; eventually becoming known as Jacksonville State University today! In 1901 Hurricane Andrew devastated much of South Florida killing dozens or millions along with extensive damage to homes, businesses and infrastructure; but despite overwhelming losses not a single classroom or building were destroyed in Gulfport! Thisrugby-like storm left behind numerous piles of debris including entire blocks from shoreline to high rise buildings inland! With no sign whatsoever that landfall could be impending another deadly hurricane hit just two years later devastating Port Everglades killing nearly 500 people and causing an estimated $10 billion worth in damage including loss or replacementof 3 million barrels oil production capacity! Although many residents had evacuated ahead of Hurricane Wilma (2005), significant flooding occurred afterWilma making it difficult to return home although some did manage to salvage belongings before being swept away by floodwaters containment walls failed during heavy rains caused by Wilma even managed to create a small bit Of levee protection seasonally average high tides reached above 30 feet creating beach erosion problems affecting both waterfront areas near Intracoastal Waterway while agricultural runoff directly affecting low lying areas adjacent to levees formed during summertime
