Gulfport was first settled in 1836 by Captain John Stroud and his wife, Martha. The town was named for the gulf of Mexico, which at that time extended from Mobile Bay to Tampa Bay. The town grew rapidly due to its position on the Gulf of Mexico River, and in 1840 it had a population of over 1,000. In 1848, the city of Jacksonville was founded adjacent to Gulfport and soon became one of the most important commercial centers in Florida. In 1860, Gulfport became an obligatory stop on the Underground Railroad during the American Civil War because of its strategic location between Jacksonville and Tampa Bay. In 1908, Gulfport was renamed after Commodore David Farragut who is credited with saving Mobile Bay from destruction by CSS "Alabama" during the Spanish-American War. World War I brought increased development to Gulfport as shipbuilding ceased and businesses moved inland into new buildings. After World War II ended there were indications that a significant decline in maritime activity might occur but this did not eventuate; instead business boomed until a recession hit in the early 1990s. This coincided with a resurgence in fishing industry as well as other economic opportunities which helped revitalize downtown Gulfport. The area now known as downtown is home to many cultural institutions such as The Museum Of Art & History (museum), Dr Pepper Museum (dr pepper museum), Druid Hills Park (druid hills park), Gatorade Arena (gatorade arena), and Point Comfort Marina(point Comfort marina).
