In the early 1800s, Gulfport was a thriving town located in the heart of the Florida Keys. The town was founded by Spanish settlers in 1795 and quickly became a center for maritime trade. By 1830, Gulfport had become one of the most important ports on the East Coast of America. The town's prosperity and importance continued until 1845, when American forces stormed ashore during the Mexican-American War and burned down much of Gulfport. Since then, Gulfport has been home to several military bases and academies that have played an important role in both local and national life. Today, Gulfport is known as a major manufacturing community and its economy is based largely on its ties to the military. In addition to its status as a major shipping port and manufacturing center, Gulfport also boasts rich history dating back to its time as a military base. Prior to World War II, the United States Naval Station (USNS) Key West was one of several naval installations operated by US Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune in North Carolina. This station played an important role in support of World War II efforts offshore from Japan. After hostilities ended in 1945, USMC Base Camp Lejeune was renamed Marine Corps Air Station Jacksonville (MCAASJ). MCAASJ remained an active naval installation until it closed in 1992. During his tenure at MCAASJ, Colonel James Wickersham served as Commandant of Marines Corps Barracks #1 across Frome Street from Middle School on Government Street within sight of USS Constitution Museum which he had built himself – this structure still stands today! Commodore John Rodgers became Commandant at JAXA Naval Air Station Patuxent River after they reopened following World War II courtesy Operation Crossroads which saw Japanese aircraft carriers reduction into rubble off Cape Canaveral! Rodgerstown served as European sidekick for USAF Raytheon Missile Rangeestablishment Eglin AFB’s Operation Neptune’s Spear Test Range… these were some heavy days at those locations just before our 9/11 attacks! During my tenure there I personally supervised over 700 ground personnel who performed more than 50 missile firings inside that range during that fateful year 2001! As you can see from this list so far there are many WWII era veteran’s associated with that facility who continue their presence today- all while providing critical services to our nation today!

The station is now home to almost 200military aircraft and support personnel.

Gulfport is a city in Mississippi, United States. The population was 9,824 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Hancock County. Gulfport was founded by Englishman George Rogers Clark on the banks of the Mississippi River in 1814. The city grew rapidly after its founding and soon became an important commercial center for the region. In 1836, it became a state capital and remained so until 1907. The cotton industry played a significant role in Gulfport's growth and development during its early years. Cotton plantations were established throughout the area and production continued to increase through the late 19th century; however, this prosperity came to an end following reliable rainfalls that year and subsequent drought conditions that followed. In 1865, Confederate General Robert Ewell attempted to establish a new Confederate capital in Gulfport but was unsuccessful due to American troops occupying town while he sought refuge inside Jackson County. At first, most people believed that Ewell had abandoned his goal because he did not receive support from local leaders; however, later evidence suggests that this decision may have been made more out of political correctness than any real concern for Fort Harrison's security or stability. During Reconstruction period (1868-1913), many African Americans worked in local mills and broom factories as part of efforts to rebuild post-Reconstruction society following slavery's abolishment in America. Many black men worked their way up through these industries despite Jim Crow laws which limited opportunities for black Americans living outside of white neighborhoods on various levels including employment, education and housing opportunity
The area now known as Gulfport was first settled by Native Americans in the 17th century. The area became a small town in 1881 when it was annexed by Jacksonville. In 1907, the city of Jacksonville annexed Gulfport and the town continued to be called Gulfport until 1959.
