The Gulfport National Guard was organized on May 12, 1941 and activated on July 1, 1941. The unit served in the American Civil War as the 4th Florida Infantry Regiment. The regiment disbanded on November 15, 1865. The Gulfport National Guard Museum was founded in 2001 and is located at 6001 E Ponce De Leon Ave., Gulfport, FL 34609. It contains artifacts from both the history of the guard and from present day operations of the unit. The museum also offers programs about military history and culture in general. The Florida National Guard has been in Gulfport, Florida since 1911. The unit was organized on November 12, 1911 as the 1st Battalion, 22nd Infantry Regiment. It was redesignated the 8th Infantry Regiment on October 1, 1916 and later redesignated the 9th Infantry Regiment on January 15, 1921. On February 14, 1923 it was re-designated the Gulfport Light Infantry Brigade and activated on April 26 of that year. The brigade disbanded on July 10, 1951.

The national guard was a former branch of the United States military which became operational in 1792. The term "national guard" first appeared in the Constitution as the Militia Clause, and it was used to describe all active and reserve members of the militia who were not otherwise exempted from military service. In 1861, Congress created a new corps of cavalry under the command of Governor-General James K. Polk. This act made the eastern seaboard an important theatre of war during the American Civil War, and it also called for increased state military forces throughout America. In 1871, President Ulysses S. Grant authorized a National Guard Bureau to be established within each state government to organize these forces into brigades or regiments on an amateur basis. The National Guard grew rapidly through World War I and II, reaching over 100 million people by 1944. During World War II alone, some 1 billion rounds of ammunition were distributed through the National Guard's systems; this was more than any other branch of the armed forces. The great majority (but not all) members served voluntarily; however, there have been several times when militias have been called into action pursuant to mobilization laws. For example, in 1917 after passage of Woodrow Wilson's New Freedom Act–a time of great social change–the National Guard was called into service to help suppress anti-war demonstrations across America; in 1933 after Franklin D Roosevelt took office as president following his severe depression–a time of economic instability and growing extremism–the National Guard was mobilized for four days for emergency purposes only after widespread strikes among public employees nationwide; later that year doughboys were drafted into Nazi Germany during World War II and many units did not return home until 1945
Gulfport is a city in Jackson County, Florida, United States. The population was 182 at the 2010 census. Gulfport was founded on December 15, 1854 by Captain John Hogg and his brother-in-law, Simon Bolivar Jacobs. It became a town on January 1, 1855 and then a city on November 3, 1907. On May 8, 1932, it merged with Mobile to form the present-day Mobile–Gulfport metropolitan area. The original name of Gulfport was "Emmonsville" after J.D. Emmons who donated land for the city in 1851. The first Europeans to visit Gulfport were Spanish explorers who landed there in 1765 and named it Atascosa de la Bahia Blanca (White Bay). In 1861 Jacksonville annexed part of Gulfport so that its citizens could benefit from voting privileges enjoyed by those living in Jacksonville proper. In 1865 an act of the General Assembly changed the name of Gulf Port from Atascosa de la Bahia Blanca to Gulf City after Rear Admiral James Fenton Sloat who commanded American forces during the Mexican War as part of Commodore John Denny's squadron which destroyed most of Mexico's shipping off Texas coaston February 14th 1865 In 1902 Interstate 10 was built through much of present day southern Jackson County including much of what is now Gulfport; this created new opportunities for business growth and led to many inventions and innovations coming out of gulf port over time including: electric streetlights (1894), dishwashers (1912), refrigerators (1936), jet aircraft engines (1957), solid state systems (1996) The current downtown skyline began taking shape in earnest around 1960 when developers started constructing apartment buildings near First Street SE between Government Boulevard SW and Second Streets NE This area would become known as “Old Town” due to its focus on commerce rather than high culture or residential development As mobile got bigger you could find more people moving into this town because jobs were always available no matter what state you were in or where you lived
