Navy deployed gift history in Gulfport, Florida dates back to the early 1900s. The first naval forces stationed in Gulfport were the U.S.S. Texas and USS Maine in 1907. During World War II, the Navy leased nearly all of land at Grand River Harbor for training and storage of warships and minesweepers. In 1945, when World War II ended, the Navy returned all of its leases except for a few hundred acres at Grand River Harbor which it retains to this day as part of its naval base complex known as Naval Station Mound Bay. Since then, gifts have been exchanged between our military and local civilians on occasion during various deployments or visits by visiting dignitaries from other countries.
