Gulfport is a small city located in Alachua County, Florida, United States. The population was 15,383 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Alachua County and the largest city within it. Gulfport was founded in 1824 by brothers John and Nicholas Gulfa as a trading post on the lower Mississippi River. The original town was destroyed by a flood in 1834 and rebuilt on higher ground; its name comes from "Gulf Port" because of this.
