The United States Air Force's (USAF) former Haines City, Florida Base is home to the world's largest aerobatics and stunt flying school. The base has been a training ground for airmen and their families since World War II. As part of the USAF's Aerobatic Heritage Program, the base hosts an annual airshow open to the public on Saturday mornings from mid-July through late October. This event features displays by different USAF aviation groups as well as demonstrations by local aircraft manufacturers. In addition to its role in training fighter pilots and providing stunt flying opportunities for children, Haines City also served as a transportation hub during World War II. Haines City is a small city in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 7,826 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tampa-St Petersburg-Clearwater metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in Haines City was James Haines on July 4, 1835. By 1840 there were twenty five families living in the city and it had a population of about hundred people. In 1846, Haines City became a county seat and by 1850 had a population of three hundred people. In 1860, John Pemberton founded Enterprise College in Haines City which now offers undergraduate degrees as well as graduate degrees from its School of Business Administration and School of Veterinary Medicine. On November 15, 1865, Confederate General Robert Ewell led an attack against Union forces near the town square killing six soldiers and wounding twenty two others before being driven off by Union cavalry under Colonel John Witherspoon with no losses on his side. After this event many residents left to join up with the Confederacy or move away because they did not feel safe after such an brazen act by Confederate General Robert Ewell). Many businesses that are still active today were started or moved to Haines City during this time including Gulfstream Airlines (founded 1946), Pinnacle Software (founded 1969), First National Bank (founded 1959), Pizza Hut (founded 1975), American Rent A Car (founded 1984), Microwave Corporation (founder 1957) and Sprint PCS LP (founder 1994). Some notable landmarks located in or around Haines City include Ford Motors Plant No 2 which was built in 1945 and closed in 2006; Old Florida State Capitol building which stands across from Miami University's Owen Fieldhouse; Gulfstream Aerospace plant also located within striking distance of downtown; Boca Raton High School also located within striking distance; Coca Cola Bottling Plant built in 1955 adjacent to US 41/SR 60 exit 12A; Sunshine Coast Aquarium & Science Center adjacent to US 19/SR 611 exit 3A

The population of Haines City peaked at 2,500 in 1920 and has since decreased to around 500 people today. The early years of Haines City were difficult as it was not well supplied with anything other than water resources and agriculture. However, over time the town developed a strong economy that relied on manufacturing and agriculture products. In 1984, the town became part of the Tampa Bay Metropolitan area which helped increase its GDP by 20%. Today, there are still some businesses in Haines City that rely on agriculture but many others have moved onto other industries such as information technology or real estate.
Haines City, Florida was founded on December 12, 1887 by J.P. Haines and his wife Anna. The city was named for Major General James Haines who fought in the Mexican-American War. The first post office in the city was established on November 30, 1889. In 1896, the town of Haines City annexed the neighboring village of Miami Beach. On May 6, 1898, a tornado touched down in Haines City and killed three people and injured twenty-eight others.
