Haines City is a small town in Florida, located thirty-six miles northeast of Tampa. The population was 7,553 at the 2010 census. It is the only community in Hillsborough County that does not have a school district. The first humans to live in Haines City were the Acoma Pueblo people who settled there around 1250 AD. They built an adobe structure which still stands today, and used it as their religious center. In 1868, Haines City was founded by J.B. Haines and his family as a citrus orchards and farming community. The name originated from Creek Indian Chief Haine's use of "haina" (forests) for "town." In 1907, the city became part of Hillsborough County when it was created from parts of Pinellas, Pasco and Rockledge counties. As Hillsborough County grew more populous, local businesses began to move out of town to larger cities such as Tampa or Jacksonville due to lack of space or competition from those municipalities’ public schools system. In 1961, with the opening of Hillsborough State College (now Hillsborough Community College), Haines City lost its largest employer and experienced rapid growth over the next few decades as students moved into the area for education opportunities instead of working in downtown Tampa or other nearby townships. However, since 2000s there has been a trend among young professionals and their families to flee annexed Tampa neighborhoods for greener pastures in older communities like Clearwater Beach or Dunedin because those areas offer better access to job opportunities and large suburban houses without all the noise, traffic congestion and high rents characteristic of inner-city neighborhoods in Tampa Bay area cities like St Petersburg/Clearwater Beach or Lakeland/Tampa Bay Shoreline
