The business thrived for many years and soon became known as one of the best in town. By 1923, it had become a large commercial operation with a dozen or so employees. The Funk brothers passed away in 1925 and their son, JG Funk II took over the business. He operated it until his death in 1969. It then went through several owners before being acquired by Harry Jacobson in 1978 who ran it until his death in 1984. The town was founded in 1892 by William Haines and his family as a result of land speculation. Haines city was named for John A. Haines, an American politician from Georgia who served as U.S. Secretary of War from 1899 to 1901 under President McKinley and later as Governor of Georgia from 1901 to 1905 under President Roosevelt. In 1923, the name of the town changed to honor Admiral George Dewey, who had been Commodore in during World War I and then become Rear Admiral in 1922 when he succeeded Captain James Fenton on the USS "Titan" as Commander-in-Chief Atlantic Fleet (later Commander-in-Chief U S Pacific Fleet). In 1970, Haines City became one of two municipalities within Jacksonville that were merged into Jacksonville proper; the other being Neptune Beach which incorporated in 1966.
