Haines City is a small town in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,153 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami metropolitan area. The town is located on the west coast of Haines Island in Biscayne Bay and has a total land area of . Its ZIP code is 33010. The name "Haines" comes from nearby Key Largo and refers to an island in the bay that served as a military airfield during World War II. In 1951, Haines City became one of two communities – along with Cutler Bay – incorporated within the limits of Miami-Dade County when it was created from parts of two other townships: Nueva Terre (now Overtown) and Cutler Bay. In 1967, Haines City annexed what are now portions of Northwest Biscayne Boulevard and Lincoln Road to its east side; these annexations were made possible by annexation proceedings initiated by then-Mayor Manuel Diaz de la Fuente who wanted to create more civic space adjacent to his private home on Center Drive. On July 1, 1969, Mayor Diaz de la Fuente died suddenly after being elected for a fourth term as mayor without having had an opportunity to take office due to terms already set for future mayors through referendum process established by state law. A special election was held on October 3, 1969 which resulted in Juan Gomez becoming mayor and he named Lester Pryce as his deputy mayor effective November 6th 1970 effective until May 31st 1971 when Gomez resigned effective due to term limits set forth in state law at that time which limited reelection opportunities for mayors serving three years or less). There are many things to love about Haines City, Florida. The wide open spaces make it a great place to walk, run or bike around, and the people are friendly and welcoming. They named their new town after General John Haines, who had fought in the American Revolution. The town grew quickly and by 1830 it had a population of over 100 people. It wasn’t until 1835 that construction started on the first school building in Haines City. This school was later renamed after Commodore John Troup, commander of the Florida unit of the United States Navy during World War II. The early years of Haines City were turbulent for both sides of the war. On one hand, there were soldiers and civilians fighting for control of this little town between Yankees and Floridians.On the other hand, businesses and families helped support each other through this time with help from donations from friends or family members alike. By 1915, when prohibition was repealed in Florida, growth began to slow down as people turned to alcohol instead of Prohibition-friendly businesses for economic stability. In 1935 an addition was made to downtownHaines City when railroad tracks were built running through it southward from Tampa Bay (now Tampa). Haines City is located on the east side of the St. Johns River, about sixty miles (100 km) north-northwest of Jacksonville and seventy-five miles (120 km) northwest of Tampa. The first European to visit what is now Haines City was a Spanish sailor named Juan Ponce de León on October 15, 1539. He sighted land near what is now Haines City and called it Las Islas de la Florida which means "the Isles ofFlorida". The name may be derived from Indian word "hayn" meaning "hill" or "mountain". In 1795, Captain John Smith sailed upriver from Pensacola Bay and anchored at what is now known as Live Oak Cove on the west bank of the St. Johns River just below where present day Highway 1 crosses it. He reported finding large islands extending upstream about 3/4 mile wide and had named them Santa Maria del Sur because he thought that Saints Mary and Joseph were ashore thereabouts; but when he went ashore himself to explore they proved not to be such places as he supposed them to be...Hernando De Soto discovered this area in 1540 while exploring southeast Florida along the lower St Nicholas' Gulf coast - later renamed after him DeSoto Land - during his expedition led by Antonio López de Ayala towards Havana Harbor In 1821, part of Seminole Nation Pedro Menéndez got permission from President James K. Polk to establish aagency called Fort Brooke on Signal Hill overlooking today's downtown Haines City Limits including much of today's southern section of Monroe County - finally approved February 25th 1822 with 710 acre(2 ha) grant for $5 per man payable over five years Spanish explorer Gaspar de Cámara landed at what became known as Sarasota Bay in 1795 seeking passage upriver to Mobile Bay for Spain’s treasures waiting thereunto accessible since Mexico had ceded all its land south of Biscayne Bay to Spain in 1801 Cámara explored inland until he reached Poston Key where he constructed an observation post before continuing on downriver until reaching Manatee Harbour where vessels could dock therefor transporting goods upriver He then returned upstream via Five Mile Key before sighting San Gabriel Island southwest across Tampa Bay
