The town of Haines City, Florida was founded by the Holland family in 1851. The community became a post office in 1872 and a city in 1903. In 2006, the city was consolidated with neighboring Clearwater Beach into one municipality. Haines City is located on Pensacola Bay on Fire Island National Park's mainland. It is bordered by Clearwater Beach to the east and north; St Petersburg to the west; and Pompano Beach to the south. The bay forms part of Pensacola Bayou which empties into Tampa Bay near downtown Tampa. The town was first settled around 1851 when families from Holland Township moved here from New York State after being displaced during the American Civil War. At that time, there were only about 25 people living in Haines City at any given time due to lack of land and resources available for settlement. Over time, however, as more people came to live in Haines City, it grew rapidly thanks to its strategic location midway between Tampa and St Petersburg along Pensacola Bayou (which then formed Tampa Bay).
