In 1954, Local Moderator Arthur Aiken contributed one thousand dollars towards purchasing two fishing boats and setting them up as an educational center known today as The Fisheries School. This donation helped grow fish farming into a major industry in Haines City and continues to play an important role today. In 1963, citizens organized a bake sale in memory of Mrs. Lillie Kapp who had devoted her life to promoting reef conservation throughout Florida’s Treasure Coast communities dating back to 1978 when she founded Reef Watch Incorporated with her husband Dennis Kapp at Neptune beach (now Sarasota). Mrs Kapp’s legacy lives on through her children – Cindy and Rick – who are both involved with Friends Of The reefs (FOTR) which provide reef education & research grants across Florida’s Treasure Coast communities including St Petersburg/Clearwater County; North Port/Fort Myers; Boca Raton/Miami; Palm Beach Gardens/West Palm Beach; Boynton Beach/Monroe Beach; Venice /St Lucie Counties etcetera…and their grandchildren Jessica & Wyatt who are also currently working on ensuring coral health & restoration along Clearwater County’s shores!

Haines City, Florida is a city in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 12,557 at the 2010 census. In 1949, Mayor Elmer Fenton established a library system which became one of Miami-Dade's largest after Hurricane Dixie destroyed many libraries statewide that year. The city also saw an increase in its population with people coming to work near Navy Yard and other new businesses opening up during this time period such as Sunoco Logistics Company (now Marathon Petroleum). In 1960s there was another surge of development with many businesses moving into Haines City including Sears Roebuck and Kmart stores along with Hollywood Boulevard becoming home to several restaurants and nightlife venues such as Joe’s Pub & Grill and Pizza Palace

The name "Haines" is derived from the Choctaw word Haini meaning "a place to go fishing." The first European to visit this area was Captain John Smith who landed on what is now Pensacola Bay in 1565.
