Haines City, Florida is a small town located in Gainesville County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. Haines City was named for Captain John A. Haines who fought in the Seminole Wars and later served as Lieutenant Governor of Florida from 1881 to 1886. In 1907 Haines City became an incorporated city with a mayor-council form of government. The first settler in what is now Haines City was James Wrigley who built a cabin on Little Big Island in 1837. He and his family were followed by others including David Jarvis and John Prentice who established farms on Long Key and Jupiter Inlet respectively in 1839-1840. By 1840 there were over 20 families living in what is now Haines City, all of whom had built their homes around a small freshwater bay which they called "Bayou Washington". In 1881 Captain John A. Haines fought in the Seminole Wars against Native Americans and became lieutenant governor of Florida; he donated land to make up for lost time on his battlefields - this included 640 acres (25 km2) east of present day downtown Gainesville that formed the nucleus for what would become today's historic core of Haines City - making it one of only two American cities – along with Mobile – to have such incorporation within its own borders during its heyday as a vibrant community. As Gainesville grew increasingly diverse with waves of European immigrants arriving starting around 1880, so too did the demographics within Haines City; soon becoming majority black following integration efforts led by Mayor Harry Bemis after white businesses abandoned town due to racial discrimination charges brought against them by local citizenspressure from white business owners). African Americans worked primarily as laborers on farms until Douglass High School opened its doors for African American students in 1959; thereafter many black professionals and entrepreneurs took up residence here including mayors Harry Bemis (1962-1968), Edwin Jackson (1969-1973), Alvin Kapp (1974-1981), Reddick Baker (1982-1986) – among many others – highlighted most prominently by Mayor Baker's successful effort to get federal funding to build newcity hall/mall complex across from old courthouse Square just south of downtown which anchors today's shopping district centered around Bayou Washington Boulevard corridor extending eastward into residential neighborhoods northeastNW corner Main Street intersection
