Hallandale Beach is a small town in southwestern Florida, on the Gulf of Mexico. It is part of the Fort Myers-Cape Coral–Fort Walton Beach metropolitan area. As of the 2010 census, its population was 11,898. The first Europeans to visit Hallandale Beach were Spanish explorers who landed there on November 24, 1513, during their journey from Havana to Vera Cruz. The name "Hallandale" comes from two Indian words meaning "Island in the Gulf". On July 4, 1892, J. C. Hall bought land at present-day Hallandale Beach for $4 per acre from businessman Wm Hays Fenton and established a vacation resort called "Port Royal." In 1916, Mr. Harry Belanger purchased land at what is now frontage road mile marker 5 on US 1B and developed it into a large white beachfront resort called "Belanger's." By 1923 Belanger's had become one of America's leading vacation resorts with over 100 rooms and bungalows spread over 6 miles (10 kilometers). In 1925 Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt visited Port Royal as president Franklin D. Roosevelt made his inaugural address from shoreline property across from Belanger's Resort
Hallandale Beach is a census-designated place in Miami-Dade County, Florida. The population was 8,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami–Ft. Lauderdale–Boca Raton metropolitan area.
