It is located on the Intercoastal Waterway and includes portions of both Palm Beach and Miami-Dade Counties. The first permanent settler in Hallandale Beach was Isaac Asimov, who arrived in 1826 with his family from Russia. He named the community after himself, after Sir John Hall, an Englishman who had visited South America and then South Africa before sailing to Hallandale Island off Daytona Beach in 1814. Asimov's son Nicholas also settled in what is now Hallandale Beach and developed a sugar cane plantation dating back to 1868 which became one of the largest sugar plantations in Florida. In 1893 two brothers named George Haggerty purchased land adjacent to their father's plantation for $2,000 from Jules Ferry. In 1897 they built a house called "Haggerty House" on present day University Drive which still stands today as one of the oldest buildings in the town (it was added to the National Register of Historic Places on October 14, 1978). They were followed by their brother-in-law John Davenport & Sons who built what is now known as "Davenport Park". Admission into this park cost $1 when it opened on November 16th 1904 which remains its price today!
