Hallandale Beach is a town in Palm Beach County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,681 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami–Ft. Lauderdale–Boca Raton metropolitan area. The first people to live in Hallandale Beach were Indian Creek natives who called it "Halandale" (meaning "shore"). The first white person to set foot on the beach was Capt. James Cook in 1778 during his exploration of the Florida Keys and he named it Broward after Queen Anne's brother, George Washington's father-in-law and guardian, Lord Berwick. In 1821 palm oil concessionaires laid out a road from Fort Myers east to Hallandale Beach to service their plantations on Biscayne Bay; but this development had no immediate impact on Hallandale Beach because it was located about 20 miles inland from Palm Springs (the then capital of California). In 1827 John Thornton built a small wharf next to what is now Government Pier and began distributing tsarofa seeds for cultivation by local Native Americans whom he called "thorny Islanders". However, Thornton didn't have any successful crops until 1840 when he discovered that an indigenous variety of yucca, Yucca bifida, could be grown successfully in warm climates without irrigation water or fertilizer - making him one of the early developers of agriculture in South Florida. Hallandale Beach, Florida is a seashore town on the Atlantic Coast of Florida. It was founded in 1878 by Captain John Hall and his family. The town was named for Colonel James A. Hall, an officer in the Confederate Army who had surrendered at Appomattox Court House. In 1925, the city of Miami annexed part of Hallandale Beach and made it its own municipality. The first settlers arrived in what is now Hallandale Beach in 1878, when Captain John Hall and his family established a cabin on land they had acquired from the Seminole Indians. The Halls became proprietors of the beachfront settlement and began to build white houses, which they named "Haley's". In 1925, Miami annexed part of Hallandale Beach as part of its effort to become more automobile-dependent than Broward County. That year, Mayor Manuel López agreed to rename the beach "Hallandale Boulevard" in honor of General James Haines, commander-in-chief United States Forces Korea during World War II. The post office opened in 1888 and continued operation until 1966; it was then replaced by the Hallandale Beach ZIP code. The community has experienced a variety of growth since 1926: real estate properties were developed along Jacksons Creek (the original name forHallandale Boulevard), some adjoining Coconut Grove; vacation rentals were built near Gulfstream Park; and job opportunities have arisen through development such as tourism related businesses (such as hotels) or IT services companies that have relocated to nearby Jupiter or Boca Raton
Hallandale Beach was founded on December 3, 1926 by officer Roy L. Hall and his wife, Maynarda. The first post office in the town was established on July 1, 1927. The first store in the town was The Courtyard Store which operated from 1928 to 1951. On October 11, 1929, a landing beach was chartered by the state of Florida to provide a place for people to disembark vessels arriving at Fort Lauderdale harbor. In 1933, an amusement park called Sea World opened in Hallandale Beach with a theme park named "Titanic". In 1941, during World War II, two naval ships were moored at the beach when they were used as targets for American bombers while Hallandale Beach residents watched from their homes. In 1945-46 three golf courses were built in Hallandale Beach: Harbour Course (1944), Ocean Course (1945) and Lakeshore Course (1946). In 1949-50 Orpheus Records had its recording studio located at Seaside Park Resort near Arthur Ashe Stadium. In 1960-61 SeaWorld moved out of the country after being purchased by another company and became what is now known as Disney's Animal Kingdom Theme Park. On November 11, 1966 Gulfstream Airlines Flight 514 crashed into the ocean off Palm Coast killing all fifty-seven passengers and six crew members aboard including Roy L. Hall himself who survived but lost most of his sight in one eye due to head injuries sustained when he Jumped overboard while trying to save others
