Hallandale Beach is a city in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 25,623 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami metropolitan area and is located on Biscayne Bay. The first Europeans to visit Hallandale Beach were the French in 1795. A trading post, Fort Saint Laurent, was established on Biscayne Bay by Pierre Menard in 1812. In 1814 Lieutenant Colonel James Kenedy founded a small town called Kenedy's Key on the east side of Biscayne Bay and named it after himself. In 1865 James Witherspoon established a plantation at what is now Hallandale Beach and named it for his friend General Andrew Jackson who had fought in the American Revolution. The beach became known as "Jackson Boulevard" because of this development. In 1893 President Grover Cleveland visited Miami and saw that there was no market for cotton in South Florida so he ordered Captain Elisha Denny to build a dock at Hallandale Beach to export cotton from Cuba. This dock became one of the most important landmarks in Miami history because it helped increase exports from South Florida and made Hallandale Beach a popular tourist spot for people from all over America. The First Hurricane season (1925–26) caused significant damage to Hallandale Beach but also resulted in many tourists visiting the area which gave rise to an even more popular tourist spot during that time period. The Second Hurricane season (1929–30) again caused some damage but also brought much needed rain which revived growth throughout much of South Florida including Hallandale Beach which reached its peak population of 50,000 people during 1929–30 with some annexations by other towns along Biscayne Bay such as Hollywood Lakeshore and Indian Rocks
Hallandale Beach was established in 1887 by the partnership of J.W. Hall and F.A. Seward as a resort town on the coast of Florida. The first post office was established in 1886, and the first hotel, The White Sands Hotel, opened in 1889. In 1905, the town became an incorporated municipality under the name of Hallandale Beach. In 1956, it merged with neighbouring Fort Lauderdale to form the new city of Miami-Dade County.
