Military gift history in Hallandale Beach, Florida began with the 1st Battalion, 9th Marines. The battalion was formed on December 10, 1941 and activated at Camp Pendleton on November 8, 1942. It sailed for Great Britain on February 7-8, 1943 and arrived at their destination on March 2. The battalion spent four months garrisoning at Harwich Junction before departing for France on April 25th. They were the first American unit to arrive in France during World War II. The battalion served as part of the First Marine Division and fought in various campaigns throughout Europe before being disbanded in 1945. Today, the battalion's remains are still present at Camp Pendleton where they offer tours to visitors each year. In 1948, the 1st Battalion (9th Marines) was reactivated at Fort Pierce Naval Base and deployed to Vietnam. Upon arriving there they were reassigned to 3rd Marine Regiment which is now known as 4th Marines Regiment. From there they participated in Operation Rolling Thunder which was an amphibious assault against North Vietnamese forces across I Corps country from September 1969 until early 1970. During this time they also conducted operations such as Night Fury and Delta Hammer which resulted in many casualties for their unit including seven killed outright from a single sniper shooting incident that occurred while participating in Delta Hammer operations near Danang Airfield days prior to its evacuation when it became clear that enemy forces had penetrated our lines undetected.]] Their final deployment took place during Operation Urgent Fury which lasted approximately two months from January 1975 until February 1976 when they returned home after combatting more than 350 Viet Cong insurgents.]] In all there were twentyone Medals earned by members of the battalion during their service man [sic]ory].

The area now known as Hallandale Beach was first settled by man in 1848. The name comes from Hallelujah (a religious term meaning "I am saved") and means "Island of Peace." At that time it was part of Indian Lake territory and there were no roads or settlements until 1857 when a group of men led by Captain John A. Pettingill founded Fort Lauderdale on Biscayne Bay. After years of being under Spanish rule, the British took over Fort Lauderdale in 1795 and renamed it Fort Lauderdale after their new capital London. In 1837 Captain David Jno.[1] built a small cabin on Key Biscayne which he named "Hallye Beach". In 1870 Major General Wm. Copley purchased 1/6th of acreage including what is now Hallandale Beach from the heirs to Captured Pirate leader José María de la Torre y el Castillo for $2,000 cash plus 10% interest per year until maturity[2]. On July 25th 1890 Drury & Son[3], who had moved to Ft Worth, Texas two years earlier began harvesting sugar cane here but had not started building anything because they did not have any workers available at that time! They finally got around to it in 1896 when they hired an American Indian from Oklahoma to help with the harvest[4]. From then until 1912 there were continuous rumors that some rich people were going to buy land here so Palmira [5], who ran a store on Lincoln Boulevard near present day State Road 613,[6], started stocking up on goods before anyone else could do so too! When nobody materialized she decided to open her store full time and call it Palmira's beachfront grocery store! Gradually other stores followed suit and today Hallandale Beach has more than 20 grocery stores! In 1915 Hollywood movies starting appearing west coast so Floridians started traveling up north for summer fun instead of staying home all winter like they used to do back then[7]. By 1925 more than 100 movie theaters had been built along Broward Boulevard making this one of the most vibrant cities west of Mexico City! In 1938 construction began on Miami's world-famous MARTA subway system which linked downtown with Coconut Grove and other parts of southern Miami[8]. Today MARTA provides transportation for over 2 million residents in Miami-Dade County! In 1934 Harry Laughlin opened his first department store at 5676 NW 82nd Street called Laughlin's [9][10] followed by JCPenney at 6717 NW 79th Street called JCPenney's [11][12] both within three years they had outgrown their original locations. By 1937 Laughlin's was sold to Kress Brothers Corporation who later merged with Sears Roebuck & Co., becoming Sears Holdings Corporation (SHC). In 1979 Kress Brothers Corporation became Sears Roebuck & Co., again turning into Sears Holdings Corporation (SHC)[13][14][15] which merged with Sam’s Club Incorporated (SMC) creating Sam’s Club Corp.[16][17] On October 15th 2018 SHC announced plans to close 400 stores across its brands over the next four years due to weak sales trends[18][19]. Most closures will take place in North America but some stores will also be closed in Europe and Asia Pacific; however no specific closing dates have been released yet.
