The Cold War caused a shift in naval strategy from surface warfare to submarine warfare. This change led to new vessels being designed specifically for submarines, such as the USS Groton and USS Mayflower. These boats had incredibly high speed and durability make them perfect for sneaking around enemy shipping undetected. As a result of these changes, submarines became one of the most feared weapons in history. In 1977, Congress passed an act that allowed retired naval officers to buy ships or boat parts from private companies without having their name attached to them. Hallandale Beach, Florida is a town in Miami-Dade County, Florida. The population was 31,853 as of the 2010 census. It is located on the southern tip of Biscayne Bay and is bordered by Kendall to the east, Lee County to the south, and Miami-Dade to the west. The name "Hallandale" comes from two places: one near Fort Lauderdale where General James Haltom had his headquarters during the War of 1812 and another called Hallandale after Admiral John A. Hall who commanded American forces at Guantanamo Bay before America's entry into World War II. The first human settlement in Hallandale Beach date back to 1795 when Spanish settlers arrived on horseback following a long journey through Central America. By 1800, Indian traders were also living in and around this area. In 1814 Captain Manuel Fernández de Portocarrero established a small Mexican trading post at what is now known as Pointe de la Cruz on Biscayne Bayou (now part of Ivanpah Lake). In 1847 Sam Houston purchased 4 square miles (10 km²) of land off Biscayne Bayou for $1,000 from José María Olivo y Urdaneta who had acquired it from Pedro Menéndez de Avilés 10 years earlier. This tract became known as Rancho San Pablo which later included most of what today makes up Hallandale Beach including Pointe De La Cruz and much ofwhat lay between that point and Worth Avenue today. In 1865 local resident Denton Sarnoff built an addition to his home on Beacheside Drive which he named "Sarnoff Manor". During World War I Sarnoff served with distinction as colonel in the United States Army Air Force One squadron flying over Europe while commanding 3d Bombardment Group quartet No 2 at RAF Merville airfield near Dunkirk Normandy; Aircraft operations control officer for Eighth Air Force strategic bombing offensive over Germany during 1945-46; posthumously awarded Distinguished Flying Cross for actions flown during airborne assault across Rhine River bridgehead--Operation Market Garden--on 15 September 1944 Over Rheinberg concentration camp; returned safely to US soil 6 days later after leading mission carrying President Franklin D Roosevelt beyond Belgian border into Holland
