Hallandale Beach is a city in Broward County, Florida, United States. The population was 16,709 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami–Fort Lauderdale-Pompano Beach metropolitan area. The city was founded as Hallandale on December 15, 1926 by Harry Wachtel and his wife Mildred. At that time it was just a small farming community with a post office and one store. In 1953, the City of Hallandale merged with Boca Raton to form the first consolidated city in Broward County. The merger resulted in the elevation of Hallandale Beach from a rural hamlet to an incorporated municipality with its own zoning laws and government services. In 1957, construction began on what would become known as "the Pier" which would be located along Hallandale Boulevard across from Palm Springs Airport and Serve as both a commercial and residential center for the town's growing population. By 1970, over 100 businesses had opened within walking distance of ashore including several large box stores such as Sears Roebuck & Co., Jamba Juice Company, KFC Greece & Cyprus Supermarket chain restaurant (now defunct), Atlantis Motel (now open concept Marriott resort), Four Seasons Resort Hotel - now Courtyard by Marriott Leisure Suites , etc). The pier also served as an excellent location for corporate events due to its close proximity to multiple waterports without having to drive or taxicabs; many large companies used it for meetings and other large events. In 1978, when Boca Raton became South Florida's first ever county-owned airport after being granted air rights by then-Governor Bob Graham the Pier became available for use by all parties regardless of airline status or terminal operation restrictions placed on other local airports serving South Florida during that time period *. By 1990 more than 350 businesses had leased space at "The Pier".
