The history of the army gift has been a long and varied one. From Gadsden flagpoles to World War II Victory Medals, there have been many different items that have been given as gifts to servicemen and women in Hialeah Gardens, Florida. One of the earliest examples of an army gift was a flagpole. In 1892, the General Butler Post Office erected a flagpole on Government Street in Hialeah Gardens. It was donated by Captain John Sievers, who served with the 1st Regiment Miami Infantry at Fort Myers during the Spanish-American War. In 1925, a steel post was donated by J.W. Woolridge and Sons for use as an artillery monument at Soldier's Field in Miami Beach. The post is still in use today as part of the parking lot for soldiers' families and their vehicles. World War II Victory Medals were also given as gifts during World War II. In 1945, Major General James Melson presented medals to members of the A Company 2nd Battalion 5th Regiment 26th Infantry Regiment for their service during Operation Overlord in Europe. The medals are displayed at Ft Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport today (see photo). The Hialeah Gardens Legion of Honor is an organization which was founded in 1922 by American World War I veteran and local business man, P.J. Hogan. The group administers the Hogan-Ferguson Award, given annually to a Hialeah Gardens resident who has made an outstanding contribution to society or the economy.
Hialeah Gardens is a city in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 14,851 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami metropolitan area. The name Hialeah comes from its location on the banks of thehiawassee River. Hialeah Gardens was established in 1927 as a small settlement on what is now Northwest First Street and Northwest Second Avenue by developers Harry and Alice Freeman. They named their new town after their home state of Hawaii, where they had vacationed for some time before moving to Florida. In 1929, Hialeah Garden's first grocery store opened. That year also saw the opening of a post office, which served both the community and neighboring Biscayne Park; it remained in operation until 1959. In 1932, Hialeah Garden's first school opened; it was eventually replaced by two high schools – one for black students and one for white students – but it remains one of many educational institutions that have been located in this community over its history. In 1951 (the same year that South Floridian Drifting Clouds Motor Speedway opened), Hialeah Garden became home to its only professional motorsports event: The All-Florida Fairgrounds auto race series'. Held annually at Cudahy Park Raceway south of downtown Miami from 1951 to 1957, AFAR featured nearly every type of racing imaginable: open wheel cars (including NASCAR), stock car races (including Big Time Modifieds and Little Americas), road races (including USAC Championship events) and drag/light hearted contests). Promoters included local businessmen Forrest "Fritz" Fritzsche and his brother Irwin Fritzsche; drivers Earl Miller ('The Snake' Johnson) and Ralph Houger ('Red' Jarrett); Eddie Lawson ('The Eagle') won five out of six races held during the series' nine seasons... One reason why Hialea Gardens emerged as an important motor racing center during this period was its location – just east of Interstate 95 – between two major highways linking southern Miami with inland areas like Fort Lauderdale and Jacksonville Beach... In 1958–59 AFAR became known as 'The Masters', thanks to Johnny Rutherford (now owner/driver of Joe Gibbs Racing'), who took home four titles during those three years... By 1969 organizers were substitutionally hosting other types Of Races At Cudahy Park Raceway Including A Grand Prix Car Race And A Non Championship Race For Auto Parts Drivers... This is due to two reasons: first, guns were more affordable after World War II; and second, civilians had access to them while soldiers were fighting abroad. Hialeah Gardens is a city in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 3,996 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami–Ft. Lauderdale–Miami Beach metropolitan area. The city was founded on December 17, 1922 by Ole Hanson and his wife Gertrude as Hialeah Honda Gardens after they bought land from Josephine Brickell for $1,500. In 1926, the town name was changed to Hialeah after Major General Julius Custer's death in the Battle of Sitting Bull Creek while campaigning in the Indian Territory. The original City Hall building burned down on November 15th, 1934 and replaced with a new one which still stands today at 527 NW Second Avenue. In 1951 Mayor Manuel Lobo commissioned architect Freeman Dyson to design an airport terminal that would be "the most beautiful airport terminal in America." The project cost $250,000 and it opened on May 16th of that year named "Leno International Airport" after then-Senator Ted Kennedy who helped finance it. It served as the primary airport for Miami until 1966 when MIA became its own county with separate Aviation Authority jurisdiction On January 1st, 1962 Hialeah was placed within Miami-Dade County effective under state law which gave more autonomy to local governments In 1976 Plantation Homes developer Harry Simmons developed a tract of land off SW 2nd Avenue known as "Hialeah Park". This development had been earmarked for public use but because no one wanted to live there developers offered it to residents free if they moved out of their homes by September 30th so they could make way for new developments . As no one wanted to leave and many people were living in expensive homes without any street access or transportation this offer expired . On October 25th 1980 two buses carrying elderly citizens from Coral Gables were hijacked by gunmen who took them into downtown Miami where they shot three passengers before crashing into an abandoned warehouse killing all six people onboard
