Hialeah Gardens is a city in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 653 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami–Fort Lauderdale–West Palm Beach metropolitan area. The city was founded on November 15, 1915 by Dr. Harry Hialeah and Mr. J.C. Nichols as a citrus grove named after Hialeah Lake in what is now Overtown neighbourhood of East Hialeah and its present site near Northwest Second Avenue and First Street in West Hialeah neighbourhoods were annexed by the City on December 1, 1920 with a population of 519 residents; during World War II it served as the naval air station for Everglades Naval Air Station (later NAS Miramar), which had an operations area covering much of southeastern Broward County including parts of Homestead Heights, Deerfield Beach and Pompano Beach; from 1945 to 1976 it operated from Fort Lauderdale's Port Everglades Naval Shipyard under Navy jurisdiction as USNAFTS Coral Gables; following that period it reverted to Army control until 1984 when it became an Air Force Base under USAF jurisdiction; finally on January 7, 1999 it reverted to Miami-Dade County control when all other local government entities merged into Miamidade County government The first settlers arrived at Hialeah Lakeshore in 1887 aboard HMS "Eagle" from England via Key West. A survey was taken in 1888 of land grants located within today's boundaries of Hialeah Gardens: one grant went to Drury Lane business man John Ault who subdivided land north along Northwest Second Avenue between First and Second Streets into Lots XI-XII for $1,000 and sold them to James Sweeny for $3,000 on October 20th 1889 In 1915 Harry Hialeah purchased 100 acres (40 hectares) of open citrus farming land east side of I-95 at SW 132nd Street & NW 10th Ave., just south/west of current day SW 147th Street & NW 2nd Ave., from Cpls George Strand & Edwin Ellerbe Harry also donated 50 acres (20 hectares) overlooking the newly developed Hollywood Hills compound - known then as Coconut Grove - where he lived with his wife Eleanor before they moved there permanently in 1922 This property would later become home to Hollywood Boulevard Productions Incorporated which produced movies such as "Wings", "The Three Musketeers", "The Sound Of Music" etc., while also serving as offices for Republic Pictures Corporation during their heyday throughout the 1940s thru 1960s In 1957 Harry donated another tract totaling 120 acres (50 hectares) directly across NW 149th Street from Coconut Grove off I-95 adjacent properties now used by North Park Golf Course owner Mr Neil Lerner since 1959 has been especially significant with this donation together with Mrs Eleanor's death leaving him sole trustee over these lands . In addition he has long maintained ownership over various tracts located between southwest corner Bald Cypress Rd east side W Causeway Blvd w/ Gulfstream Airport owned by heirs or assigns connected thereto between Long Island Harbour Marina Terminal island Int'l Waterfront Park reopening Harborfront development housing units leased back year round expires Dec 2017 . Hialeah Gardens, Florida is a city in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was over 100,000 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous city in Miami-Dade County and the second most populous suburb of Miami after Brickell. Hialeah Gardens was founded by Cuban refugees in 1919 as part of a larger citrus industry consolidation that also included South Beach and Overtown. The original name for the community was Floral Park. The boom years for Hialeah Gardens were during World War II when munitions production increased due to American demand for Nazi Germany's supply of munitions. The city saw an influx of white European immigrants from all over Europe who would work in industries such as construction or agriculture; however, many African Americans did not have access to these opportunities and experienced poverty and social unrest until the late 1960s when new housing developments were built throughout Hialeah Gardens. In recent decades, however, crime rates have decreased while property values have soared because of its proximity to downtown Miami and other metropolitan areas within driving distance.
Hialeah Gardens was once a thriving streetcar and bus stop on the Las Vegas Boulevard corridor. The area now known as Hialeah Gardens was developed around 1901, when a group of Spanish-speaking residents moved from Havana to what is now the city of Miami. They named their new community after their native land, Helelah, which means "humble" in Arabic. By 1912, the population had grown to over 10,000 people and the name became permanent. The first buses started arriving in 1915 and by 1916, there were six buses per day leaving from this stop. In 1922, Hialeah Gardens had its first movie theater with a capacity of 100 seats. The following year saw the opening of a garage for cars – one of only two such structures in that area at that time – which allowed for more rapid expansion of this already busy neighborhood. In 1929, City Council passed an ordinance establishing good public transportation within city limits with eleven specific stops throughout downtown Miami providing service eastbound and westbound on Michigan Avenue (now Wynwood Avenue). This resulted in increased traffic congestion at Hialeah Gardens so Mayor John Floreano ordered all stops closed on October 1st 1930 effective November 30th until further notice. This order created quite the stir local media covered as they speculated about how this would impact business owners who relied on customers coming into town for lunch or dinner…or shopping! A $5 million dollar campaign was launched by mayor Floreano to re-open all stops; however it failed miserably due to lack of funding and less interest than originally anticipated. In 1933 however another campaign led by civic leader Harry Payneillions succeeded in raising enough money to reopen all but one stop; however again due to lack of funds it too failed also becoming an internet sensation known as "the drive-by shooting event". Finally in 1935 reopening stopped occurred at Michigan Ave & Sunrise Highway after years of planning with support from then Mayor Manuel Gomez; despite objections being voiced by some business owners opposed to high taxes being levied AGAINST THEIR BUSINESSES!! Hialeah Gardens quickly became one of South Florida's most popular areas for shopping and entertainment with its many nightlife destinations including casinos (such as Monte Carlo), theaters (including The Strip) as well as several professional sports teams such as the Miami Marlins baseball team and American Football League’s Miami Dolphins football team playing there during those days before they relocated elsewhere beginning play in 2005 rivals Everglades Park.. Today much like then it is still home to large concentrations Of Hispanics both legal & illegal making it America's second largest Hispanic Metro Area behind Chicago Latinos
