Hialeah Gardens, Florida is a suburb of Miami, located in the city of Miami Beach. The population was 5,819 as of 2010. The name "Hialeah Gardens" was given to the community by developer Alvaro Herrera in 1965 when he purchased 6 acres (2 hectares) of land on NE Third Avenue in Hialeah. He named it after his hometown, Havana, Cuba. In 1968, Herrera built a home and studio complex called Sun Lakes at 12001 NE Second Ave., which became one of the largest shopping malls in South Florida. Sun Lakes also hosted the Heat/Lakers NBA Finals game in 1984 and 1988. In 1990, Alvaro Herrera sold his share of Sun Lakes to developers emeritus Arturo Frondizi and Tom Kappos for $205 million. They renamed it "Hialeah Gardens". The first phase of development - known as "The Grove" - started with construction of 815 homes from 1985 through 1989. Phase 2 began with construction from 1990 through 1993 and added an additional 375 homes over that period;Phase 3 began in 2004 and included 505 new homes including 202 luxury condos completed since 2006). Hialeah Gardens is a city in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 33,671 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami metropolitan area and includes both Hialeah and Kendallville neighborhoods. The city was founded by Spanish colonists in 1565 as Hialeah de la Vega on the mouth of the Miami River. In 1835 it became part of what was known as the 'Old West' region of Florida due to its strategic location between Tampa Bay to the north and Key Biscayne to the south. By 1845 it had become one of the most important port cities on Florida's Gulf Coast due to its cargo handling capabilities and its access to transportation routes including boats along Miami's southern coast. In 1909 Hialeah Garden City – then called Fort Lauderdale – was incorporated as a result of an effort by local civic leaders led by Mayor John Prentice King who saw that Fort Lauderdale could not remain isolated from either its sister city or adjacent Jacksonville while still being a commercial center because Jacksonville had become too large for any one municipality alone to handle all aspects of their businesses successfully. The original name for Garden City may have been chosen because there were no other similar towns in South Florida at that time which would make good sites for early gardens (the phrase "Garden City" comes from English where it means "a nice place"). Nearby Plantation Park would be built in 1927 when Broward County annexed Garden City into its territory; this addition increased downtown business opportunities for both sides of town while also providing more public space within which businesses could grow larger without distraction from residents living near them. After America entered World War II following Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor 25%of all Housing Authority housing stock went up for sale nationwide so again management decided it made more sense not to build new housing but instead allocate some resources towards marketing/promotion/purchasing surplus older housing units which we managed quite effectively given our limited resources) By 1970 almost all streets in Garden City had been renamed after military personnel killed or wounded during combat thereby completing what I believe was an unofficial street naming program conducted during that time period... now if you walk down any major avenue in Fort Lauderdale or Miami Beach you'll see at least one military family residing therein permanently or temporarily!... something going back pretty far indeed!
The area now known as Hialeah Gardens was first settled by the Keyseras in the early 1800s. The Biscayne Bay area was part of Key West until 1846, when it became part of Miami County, Florida. In 1872, Miami County was merged into Broward County and Hialeah Gardens became a part of that county. In 1898, the Miami Electric Railway built a line from downtown Miami to the new city of Fort Lauderdale. The railroad helped spur development in what is now Hialeah Gardens and other areas around Miami. Hialeah Garden High School was founded in 1915 and named for famed golf course designer Andrew Johnson Simpson. It served students from pre-K through 12th grades until it closed in 1984.
