Hialeah Gardens, Florida is a city in Miami-Dade County, Florida. The population was 362 at the 2010 census. It was founded on November 10, 1932 by two brothers from Tampa, Florida as Hialeah Park. The original name of the park was changed to Hialeah Gardens on December 15, 1942 after the area became part of the United States during World War II. In 1959, it merged with neighboring Miami Beach and became one city again. The first white European American inhabitant of Hialeah Gardens was Gaines Witherspoon who arrived in 1836 and platted what is now known as Old Hialeah Road. White farmers started arriving in this area beginning in the early 1800s and by 1878 there were 4 farms within 1 mile of what is now City Hall Square. By 1912 there were over 20 white families living in these areas that included: Northwest corner of State Road 7 (now Memorial Drive) and Northwest corner of US 41 (now US 34). A few years later Portuguese immigrants began arriving to Plantation Key which located off present day NW 3rd Ave., just northwest of downtown Miami Beach In 1922 three brothers - John Peele Sr., Harry Witherspoon and Clarence Witherspoon - purchased 2 lots at SW Second Avenue & SW First Street for $5 per acre (the land then being called Northeast Corner). They named their tract "Hialeah Gardens" after their home state – Alabama – where they had grown up. This invasion started an influx of new people that would populate many neighborhoods throughout South Florida for decades to come including parts around Coral Gables/Southwest Boca Raton/Tampa/Manatee Bay etcetera until finally becomingMiami’s majority-minority community following Hurricane Andrew’s devastating storm surge in 1992 levelling most or all homes along SE 3rd Ave between NE First Street & NW Second Avenue creating today’s Little Haiti neighborhood primarily through displacement although some African Americans also lived here prior to Andrew's landfall due Ocean View Blvd./NW Third Ave.– latterly renamed Overtown since development took place adjacent to both parks; however much previous housing remains extant– see map attached
