On July 25, 1907 an Act of Congress designated Flagler Boulevard (now Northwest 5th Avenue) as the first street in what became Hialeah Gardens. A year later on October 9, 1908 Captain Harry Hampton donated land adjacent to Palm Bay beach on Flagler Boulevard so that people could park their cars there overnight while they shopped or dined without having to worry about getting towed away if they didn't have a valid US license plate (). The first store opened in 1909 at 819 NW Second Ave., operated by Wm Jardine & Sons Ltd.; afterwards it grew rapidly with several more stores opening throughout 1912 before finally closing its doors in 1916 due to financial difficulties (). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 24 square miles (60 km²), all of it land. As of the census of 2000, there were 15,902 people, 7,719 households, and 4,848 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 2,883/km² (6,596/mi²). There were 8,063 housing units at an average density of 1,402/km² (3,609/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 98% White; 0% African American; 0% Native American; 0% Asian; 0% Pacific Islander; 1%from other races; and 1%from two or more races.
