The history of the Air Force in Hialeah, Florida dates back to World War II. The city was a major military center during that time and the Air Force played an important role in its development. The first air force squadron was activated at Hialeah Municipal Airport on November 10, 1942. It was part of the Ninth Air Force and served as a training squadron for new pilots. The airport saw heavy use during the war and became one of the most important military installations in South Florida. After the war, Hialeah Municipal Airport became a general aviation airport and saw more use by aircraft enthusiasts than Military Aviation. This tower would be known as "HIALEAHR" and help manage all airspace around Miami-Hialeah-Ft Lauderdale Intercontinental Airport. Today, "HIALEAHR" remains an important part of local aviation history and serves as a symbol of collaboration between Miami-Hialeah-Ft Lauderdale Intercontinental Airport and other airports across South Florida.

Hialeah is located on State Road 527 northeast cornering Federal Highway 95 which forms its southern border with Broward County; eastbound SR 95 bisects US-1 (I-95) just south of downtown while westbound SR 95 forms its northern border with Palm Beach County
