In 1535 Portuguese sailors discovered Java while sailing around Australia and they soon started trading with the locals for various goods such as pepper, rice, spices and other valuable commodities like coffee. Until recently it was believed that only Native Americans knew how to grind coffee properly which made it difficult for Europeans to purchase high quality beans from these regions. However recent research has shown that some Arabians did know how to do this skill back in pre-Columbian times! In 1795 French explorer Pierre Jacotin discovered Borneo while on his way to find new trade routes between Europe and Asia bypassing the Indies; he discovered what would later become known as Java Island where he found whole bean coffee trees growing wild! After tasting this delicious beverage for the first time he wrote: “This excellent drink must needs proceed from a strong infusion of roasted beans” (Jacotin). He named his newfind Java after Emperor Augustus’s flagship ship –Java Prince –and returned home with samples of this unique beverage which he brought back with him to France where he made further discoveries about Indonesia etc… French traders began importing whole bean coffees from Indonesia beginning in 1802 which led eventually to Dutch domination of Indonesia starting in 1826!
