Hialeah, Florida is a city in Miami-Dade County, Florida. The population was 897,821 as of the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Miami-Dade County. Hialeah is part of the Greater Miami metropolitan area and is home to both the University of Southwestern Florida and American Airlines Arena. The site of present-day Hialeah was first inhabited by the Timucua people in what is now central Florida in 1565 after they overran Cuba on their way to become Spanish colonists. In 1763, Hialeah became part of British North America when Spain ceded it to Great Britain as part of the Treaty of Paris following the Seven Years War. The first white person to live here was John Jameson who founded a plantation called "Jardin de la Familia" in 1818 near current day Hollywood Boulevard and Eastern Avenue. In 1835, Captain Manuel Diaz established "El Rancho de las Estrellas", which became one of Latin America's largest cotton plantations before it closed its doors in 1984 due to competition from more efficient varieties developed by boll weevils across southern Mexico and Central America. During World War II, Hialeah served as an airfield for United States Army Air Forces B-24 Liberator bombers stationed in Key West during Operation Torch; however it only had a single runway open at its peak operational capacity because so many planes were damaged or lost during combat operations that it was eventually shut down for good on September 25, 1944. Hialeah, Florida is a city in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 51,745 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami–Ft. Lauderdale–Boca Raton metropolitan area and lies within the Everglades National Park. Hialeah is one of two cities in South Florida that are considered to be " streetcar suburbs." The first white people to arrive in what is now Hialeah were Spanish settlers who arrived in 1565 from Cuba. The region around present day Hialeah was inhabited by Apalachee Indians until 1795 when Spain ceded it to Congress as part of the Treaty of Paris following the American Revolution. Spanish traders and travelers discovered salt marshes and freshwater springs here in the early 1800s, which led to its nickname "The Venice of South Florida." In 1835, Colonel James Eustis built Fort Eustis on land that he had purchased from the Apalachicola tribe near what is now downtown Hialeah. By 1840, over 1,000 Anglo-American families lived here with indentured servitude under English rule; most residents were African Americans brought over as slaves during America's antebellum period. In 1861 during American Civil War (1861-1865), Confederate General Robert Ewell besieged Fort Sumter before retreating towards Richmond HQ via Mobile Bayou; this event marks the beginning of an era known as "the Lost Cause" for Confederates and helped boost southern morale after their defeat at Bull Run (1862). After Reconstruction ended with slavery abolished in 1865 nationally, many black Americans seeking freedom from northern masters relocated southward into southern states such as Florida where they could find opportunity and citizenship rather than remain subject to white supremacy under Jim Crow laws. Some blacks did move northward into Ohio or Pennsylvania but most chose to remain south because they wanted a chance at better lives for themselves and their families than existed under segregationist policies practiced by northerners supremacists like Abraham Lincoln while living among whites – something that would come true for all races only after contact between North and South recommenced following World War II (1939-1945). The first English settlement in Hialeah was founded by Captain John Smith and his men on November 12, 1763. The town was named after the Miami River which flows through it. The first permanent English settler in Hialeah was Colonel James Wilkinson who arrived in 1768. After Wilkinson's death, a group of investors led by Nicholas Biddle acquired Wilkinson's land and renamed the town Hialeah after themselves. In 1801, Spanish settlers arrived in what is now parts of Miami-Dade County and began to develop the area around Hialeah. By 1810, there were over 50 English, Spanish, and Indian families living in what is now Hialeah. After Florida became a state in 1907, many new immigrants started arriving from all over America to work on sugar plantations near Fort Lauderdale or within walking distance of the city limits. This increased competition for jobs forced many people to leave their homes and form their own small towns throughout central Broward County as early as 1916. Some residents of these towns continued to live near each other until they moved out of reach of farmland or industry during World War II when military bases were built nearby.
