The area that is now Hialeah was originally inhabited by the Timucua tribe and was part of what is now New Mexico. It also served as a staging ground for Indian War campaigns against American settlers upriver until 1828 when it reverted back under Spanish control following their victory over these rebels at Buena Vista Bridge (now Everglades National Park). Following Mexican independence from Spain on November 25, 1898, Ft Myers Beach reverted back under Brazilian sovereignty once again but it would remain an important military post through World War II until it closed its doors after becoming too costly to maintain. In 1898, when Gussie McCarthy opened his grocery store on Northwest Seventh Street between Eighth Street and Ninth Avenue in present day Overtown Terrace, he became one of the first businesses to open in what would later become Hialeah proper; prior to that time grocery stores were located primarily throughout DowntownMiami or near other commercial areas outside of Overtown Terrace.
