The National Guard of Florida is a military reserve force in the state of Florida that was organized on July 1, 1897. The original troops were called the "Volunteer Infantry" and were recruited from soldiers who had served in the Spanish-American War and World War I. The National Guard was created as an answer to the concerns of Floridians who felt that their state's militia could not handle the security challenges posed by black residents and tourists. In 1949, the National Guard became a full-time duty force with its own leadership. In 1970, it was merged into the Florida State Police. Today, there are more than 100,000 members of the National Guard in addition to200 paramilitary units made up of both Army Reserve and Air Force Reserve members. National Guardsmen have played a significant role in various moments during our history. From Memorial Day displays at Fort Lauderdale Beach to Hurricane Andrew relief efforts after Andrew's landfall in 1992, guardsmen have displayed heroism and valor on many occasions.

The Union army eventually defeated Confederate troops at Antietam and Cold Harbor, ending the Civil War. As part of the peace process, President Abraham Lincoln authorized the creation of 1 million more soldiers for use in civilian roles across America. After the war ended, many soldiers were released from duty and returned home. On September 15, 1870, Congress passed an act authorizingthe organization of a national guard regiment for each state in order to ensure continuity within America’s military establishment. The first national guard regiment was created on October 6th and served until 1892 when it was disbanded due to budgetary limitations.
